Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Creighton To Win Three-Game Series

Julia Renny led the Providence offense with five RBI and one home run on the day.


OMAHA, Neb.- The Providence College softball team (8-11, 2-1 BIG EAST) swept Creighton (12-16, 4-2 BIG EAST) in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14, to win the season series, 2-1. The Friars secured an 8-7 victory in the opener before earning a 6-3 win in game two. Senior Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with one home run and five RBI across the two games.

GAME ONE NOTES

  • Creighton scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bluejays added five runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • Providence cut the deficit to 6-3 in the third inning behind an RBI single from Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) and a two-run home run by Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.).
  • Renny hit a three-run home run to left field in the fourth inning to tie the game, 6-6.
  • Creighton scored in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead, 7-6.
  • Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) hit a two-run double to center field in the sixth inning to give the Friars an 8-7 lead.
  • Providence held on for an 8-7 victory.
  • Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched six innings of relief to earn the win, allowing one run and striking out two.

GAME TWO NOTES

  • Providence took an early 2-0 lead in the first behind RBI from Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) and Renny.
  • Creighton responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3–2 lead.
  • Providence reclaimed the lead (4-3) in the third inning as Dunn drove in Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) on an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Friars extended their lead to 6-3 in the sixth with an RBI single from Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.). Renny later drew a walk with the bases loaded to score another run.
  • Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched a complete game for the Friars. She allowed three runs and struck out two batters to earn the win.

ON DECK…

The Friars are set to host a doubleheader against Boston College on Wednesday, March 18, at Glay Field. The first game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start, followed by the second at 5:00 p.m.
