Friar Men’s And Women’s Track Teams Compete At Harvard Beantown Challenge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Harvard Beantown Challenge in Cambridge, Mass. Junior Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) led the Friar women as she won the 1,000 meters in 2:41.07, setting a new program record and breaking Millie Paladino's 2019 mark of 2:42.13. The Friar women also earned a first-place finish from freshman Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand), who captured the 3,000 meters in 9:24.29. The Friar men were led by sophomore Tom Breen (Providence, R.I.) and senior Nik Ventura (Jamison, Pa.). Breen placed fourth in the 600 meters and broke his own program record with a time of 1:20.17 while Ventura won the triple jump with a program-record mark of 13.74 meters.

In addition to O'Neill's win in the 1,000 meters, junior Keira Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand) and senior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) finished second and third, respectively, with times of 2:47.59 and 2:47.66. The time was a personal best for Hall.
 
Following Currie in the 3,000 meters, sophomore Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland) placed second (9:29.83) and senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) finished third (9:43.59).
 
In the mile, freshman Gemma Galvin (Clare, Ireland) placed second (4:45.56) while sophomore Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned third (4:46.67).
 
On the men's side, senior Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) earned fourth in the mile with a time of 4:05.93 while sophomore Daniel Prescott (Christchurch, New Zealand) placed seventh (4:09.56).
 
Other Friar men with strong performances included junior William Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand), who finished fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:25.88). Senior Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.) set a new personal best and placed fifth in the 500 meters (1:04.72) while sophomore Liam McCay (Liverpool, England) finished 10th in the 3,000 meters (8:31.41).
 
The Friars return to action on Jan. 30-31 at the Boston University Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass.
