Creighton Uses Strong Fourth Quarter To Defeat Friars, 79-66

Olivia Olsen recorded her seventh double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

OMAHA, NEB. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Creighton, 79-66, on Feb. 2 at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. The Friars dropped to 9-15 overall (2-9 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays improved to 18-4 (10-1 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The game was tied, 22-22, at the conclusion of the first quarter.
• A well-balanced attack fueled the Friars' offense and were led by Grace Efosa's seven points. Olivia Olsen and Kylee Sheppard added six points and five points, respectively.
• Both teams shot north of 50-percent from the field to start the game. The Friars checked in at 64.3-percent (9-14), while the Bluejays shot 56.3-percent (9-16).
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Creighton drilled five threes (5-9) in the second quarter to claim a 39-33 lead at halftime.
• The Bluejays outscored the Friars 17-11 overall in the frame.
• Five different Friars cracked the scoring column in the second quarter.
• Creighton secured five offensive rebounds in the first half and took advantage on the scoreboard with a 12-4 edge in second-chance points.
• Providence outscored Creighton 20-12 in the paint in the first half.
 
3RD QUARTER:
Brynn Farrell scored five-straight points in the first 55-seconds of the third quarter to get Providence within 39-38.
• The Friars used a 9-0 run to take a 47-43 lead during a span of 1:36 to force a Creighton timeout. 
• Olsen scored seven of the Friars' nine points in the run.
• The Friars extended their run to 11-0 to take a 49-43 edge before Creighton got back on the board with 4:53 to play in the quarter.
• Creighton outscored Providence 10-5 to close the third and cut the deficit to 54-53 heading into the fourth.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars scored back-to-back buckets to start the fourth quarter and claimed a 58-53 lead with 8:58 on the clock.
• The Bluejays used an 18-2 run over the final 5:22 of the game to claim a 79-66 victory. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS / NOTES:
• Olsen finished with a season-high 22 points and added 10 rebound to record her seventh double-double of the season. 
• It marked her third double-double in the last five games. She also recorded her second 20+ point game of the season and fourth of her career.
• Olsen also moved into fifth place on the Friars' all-time rebounding list with her 10 boards. She now has 826 rebounds in 118 career games, jumping ahead of Tracy Lis '92, who finished her career with 821 boards in 127 games.
• Farrell joined Olsen in double figures with 11 points. Sheppard and Efosa each added nine points.
• Providence committed a season-low eight turnovers in the game.
• The Friars shot 52-percent from the field (26-50), but were a disappointing 8-16 from the foul line (.500), including 6-14 from the stripe in the second half.
• Creighton shot 47-percent from the floor (28-59), including 10-27 from beyond the arc (.370). The Bluejays also capitalized at the foul line (13-19).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Thursday, Feb. 6 against DePaul for its annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day, presented by Amica. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
