Audrey Knapp’s Overtime Winner Lifts Women’s Ice Hockey Over Merrimack, 3-2

Knapp scored her second straight overtime winner.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Merrimack College, 3-2, in overtime on Friday, Dec. 5 at Schneider Arena. The Friars improved to 6-10-2 overall and 3-4-2 in Hockey East play, while the Warriors dropped to 3-13-1 and 0-9-0. Junior Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) scored the overtime winner, her second consecutive overtime winner.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
  
-Merrimack opened the scoring 3:30 into the first period on a goal from Jordan Nishi. Cameron Crawford and McKenzie Cerrato assisted.
 
-Senior Kayla Kutes (Kirkland, Wash.) tied the game for the Friars with 55 seconds left in the first period. Freshman Sami Snyder (Waterloo, Ontario) and senior Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) recorded the assists. The goal is Kutes' second of the season and third of her career. It also marked Snyder's first career assist. Kirchmair has a three-game point streak with the assist.
 
-Providence killed two Warrior power plays in the opening frame, while the Friars were unsuccessful on their lone power play attempt.
 
-Shots on goal after the first were 14-7 in favor of the Friars.
 
-The Friars took a 2-1 lead 3:44 into the second period on a goal from freshman Taylor Leemrijse (Toronto, Ontario), her first career goal. Senior Sarah Davies (Mississauga, Ontario) and Knapp assisted. The assist is Knapp's 10th of the season, making her the only Friar with double-digit assists.
 
-At 6:53 of the second period, junior Peyton Blaney (Millgrove, Ontario) was assessed two minor penalties for cross checking and holding, giving the Warriors a four-minute man advantage. Forty-seven seconds into the power play, junior Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.) was called for body checking, giving Merrimack a full two-minute, two-man advantage. The Friars successfully killed off all three penalties and did not allow a shot on goal.
 
-Providence extended its shots-on-goal advantage after the second period to 28-12.
 
-Just 50 seconds into the third period, Merrimack's Stina Sandberg was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for spearing. The Friars were unsuccessful on the power play.
 
-The Warriors tied the game at 8:09 of the third period on a goal from Cerrato. Crawford and Nishi assisted.
 
-The teams headed to overtime tied at two. It marked the third straight game the Friars have gone to overtime.
 
-At 3:08 of overtime, Knapp scored the game-winning goal for the second straight game. Graduate student goaltender Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) was credited with the assist, her third of the season.
 
-Walinski made 15 saves for the Friars.
 
-With the win, Providence earned back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
 
-The Friars improved to 27-3-2 all-time against Merrimack, while Matt Kelly is now 20-2-1.
 
-Providence is 4-0-2 in overtime this season.
 
-Kelly improved to 99-68-21 in Hockey East play, one win shy of 100.
 
-The Friars are now 4-3-2 at Schneider Arena this season.
 
-Providence is a perfect 5-0-0 when scoring three or more goals.
