Women’s Hockey Defeats Vermont On The Road, 4-1

Kiara Kraft recorded three points in the win.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Providence College women's hockey team defeated the University of Vermont, 4-1, on Friday, Jan. 30, at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Friars improved to 8-17-2 overall and 5-10-2 in Hockey East play, while the Catamounts fell to 12-13-4 overall and 6-8-3 in conference action. Junior Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.) recorded three points for the Friars, tying her career high in a game.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
 
1st Period
-Providence killed off an early Vermont power play at 5:28 of the period.
 
-The Friars opened the scoring at 10:37 of the first period on freshman Molly Farace's (Otonabee, Ontario) first career goal. Junior Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.) and sophomore Jessie Pellerin (Bowmanville, Ontario) recorded the assists on the play.
 
-Providence went on the power play for the first time in the game at 13:34 of the period but did not convert.
 
-Shots on goal after the first 20 minutes were 12-5 in favor of the Friars.
 
-The Friars head to the second period with the lead for only the fourth time this season.
 
2nd Period
-The Catamounts tied the game at one at 6:46 of the period on a goal from Kaylee Lewis. Stella Retrum and Lauren O'Hara earned the assists.
 
-Providence regained the lead at 10:26 of the period on sophomore Hannah Clarke's (Richmond Hill, Ontario) first collegiate goal. Kraft recorded her second assist of the game on the tally while senior Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario) earned her first assist of the afternoon. With the assist, Cavaliere leads the team with 13 helpers this season.
 
-Each team had a power-play opportunity in the period but did not convert.
 
-The Friars led in shots on goal 22-17, after the period.
 
3rd Period
-At 4:06 of the final period, Kraft stole the puck from a Catamount and scored her first goal of the game to register her third point of the afternoon, making it 3-1 Friars. The goal was unassisted and marked Kraft's second career three-point game.
 
-Twenty seconds after Kraft's goal, senior Mégane Quirion (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) scored her first goal of the season to extend the lead to 4-1. Freshman Sami Snyder (Waterloo, Ontario) and Clarke recorded the assists. It marked Clarke's second career multi-point game.
 
Notes
-Graduate student goaltender Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) made 25 saves for Providence.


-The Friars improved to 42-23-7 all-time against the Catamounts and are unbeaten in their last eight games against Vermont. Head Coach Matt Kelly moved to 10-8-3 against the Catamounts.
 
-Providence now has four road wins this season.
 
-The Friars are 4-0-1 when leading after two periods and 7-0-0 when scoring three or more goals this season.
 
-Providence improved to 4-0-0 this season when Clarke records an assist.
 
-The Friars snapped Vermont's seven-game unbeaten run.
