Friars Drop Tightly Contested Match-Up To BIG EAST Foe St. John's, 55-48

Olivia Olsen and Brynn Farrell each recorded a double-double in the effort.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.
 – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 55-48, on Jan. 6 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars evened their record at 8-8 and dropped their first BIG EAST game of the season (2-1). St. John's improved to 9-7 (3-1 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence scored the first three points of the game, but St. John's responded with an 8-0 run to force a PC timeout (5:19).
Sarah Bandoma halted the Friars' drought on the Friars' next possession, sparking a 4-0 spurt to get Providence within one (8-7).
• The Red Storm finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 17-7 lead at the break.
• The Friars were scoreless the final 3:55 of the first quarter.
• Providence hit just 3-13 attempts from the field (0.231) in the opening 10 minutes, while St. John's converted 7-16 shot attempts (0.438)
 
2ND QUARTER:
• After an early drought by both teams, Providence's Brynn Farrell cracked the scoring column for the first bucket of the quarter at the 5:48 mark (17-9).
Olivia Olsen followed with her first bucket of the game to cut the deficit to six (17-11).
• St. John's extended its lead to 10 at the 3:51 mark and again with 2:39 remaining in the quarter (24-14).
• Providence scored four-unanswered points to close the half.
• St. John's took a 24-18 lead at halftime, thanks to 12 first-half points from Unique Drake.
Brynn Farrell and Bandoma each scored four points for Providence. Farrell led all players on the boards with six rebounds. 
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars started the third with an 8-0 run to take a 26-24 lead at the 7:36 mark.
• Providence extended the run to 15-2 and claimed a 33-26 lead with 3:43 on the clock.
• St. John's was scoreless for 4:01 until Mayo hit 1-2 free throws at the 3:18 mark (33-27).
• A 6-0 spurt by the Red Storm helped cut the deficit to 35-33 with 48-seconds on the clock.
Nariah Scott hit a timely baseline three for the Friars with 13-seconds left on the clock, but the Red Storm closed the quarter with a lay-up as time expired.
• The Friars carried a 38-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
• Olsen paced the Friars with six points, six rebounds and two steals in the frame.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• St. John's used a 6-0 run to take a 41-40 lead with 6:33 remaining.
• The Red Storm extended their lead to four (45-41) with 3:43 to play.
• Olsen ended a scoring drought of 3:33 with a lay-in at the 2:22 mark to make it a 45-43 game.
• The Red Storm answered with four-straight points to go ahead by six (49-43) with 35-seconds left to play.
• Farrell converted a traditional three-point play with 20-seconds left to make it a one-possession game (49-46).
• The Red Storm closed out the game with a 6-2 scoring advantage, going 6-6 from the free-throw line to seal the win. 
 
NOTES:
• Farrell and Olsen each recorded a double-double in the Friar effort. It marked the first time since the 2014-15 season that two players recorded a double-double in the same game.
• Farrell finished with 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. 
• Olsen completed the game with 12 points and 10 boards.
• Drake paced St. John's with a game-high 24 points.
• The Friars won the glass, 41-24, including a 14-5 advantage in offense rebounding.
• Providence turned the ball over 23 times, allowing St. John's to mount a 23-14 scoring advantage in points off turnovers.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 10 against Connecticut. The game will be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Tip-off is schedule for 6:30 p.m. on SNY.
