Softball Spilts Double-Header Against DePaul In BIG EAST Action

CHICAGO, ILL. – The Providence College softball team split two games against DePaul in BIG EAST play on Sunday, April 2 in Chicago, Ill. The Friars defeated the Blue Demons, 12-1, in five innings in game one and the Blue Demons earned a 9-5 win over the Friars in game two.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
-The Friars earned an early advantage in the first inning. Sophomore Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and freshman Geanice Morales (San Antonio, Texas) each hit RBI singles to give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
-Freshman Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) extended the Friars lead in the second inning hitting a two RBI single to second base.
-The Blue Demons' Baylee Cosgrove hit singled to left field to bring in a run for DePaul in the second inning. 4-1.
-Freshman Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) contributed two hits in back-to-back at-bats to add insurance for the Friars. The Friars led 7-1.
-The Friars continued to have success at the plate scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning to end the game. Renny, Morales and Quirk each contributed RBIs for the Friars.
-Quirk pitched a complete game for the Friars earning her second win of the season.. She only allowed four hits and one run.

GAME TWO NOTES
-DePaul's Brooke Johnson doubled to right center field to give DePaul a 1-0 advtanage in the first inning.
-After two scoreless innings for both teams, sophomore Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass) singled to right center field allowing sophomore Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) to score for the Friars, 1-1.
-The Blue Demons responded in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs to regain the lead, 5-1.
-Junior Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) homered to right field in the top of the fifth bringing in two runs for Providence, 5-3.
-DePaul added insurance to its lead off a two run double from Cosgrove, 7-3.
-In the sixth inning, Quirk hit her first collegiate home run to slim the Blue Demons lead to three.
-Senior Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) started in the circle for the Friars pitching 3.1 innings. She allowed three runs and struck out two batters. Freshman Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) and Quirk also pitched for Providence pitching 0.2  and 2.0 innings, respectively.

ON DECK
The Friars will face Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. for a single game on Wednesday, April 5 followed by a doubleheader on Thursday, April 6.
