PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team is set to play five games in the Purple & Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb University from March 3 – March 5. The Friars will play two games against Saint Louis (March 3, March 4) and Lipscomb (March 3, March 4). Providence will conclude the tournament on March 5 against Youngstown State. The Friars will remain in Tennessee and face Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn. on Tuesday, March 7.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter the weekend 5-5 overall after going 4-1 in the Buc Up! Tournament in Charleston, S.C. from Feb. 17- Feb. 19.
Junior
Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) leads the Friars at the plate recording 12 hits with a .414 batting average. She has tallied a team-high four homeruns and 10 RBI. Harrington was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 20 after registering eight hits and three homeruns over five games in the Buc Up! Tournament.
Junior
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) has gone 3-2 on the season pitching 35.0 innings recording a team-high 39 strikeouts. She pitched three complete-game victories in the Buc Up! Tournament and was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 20. In the Friars win against UMass on Feb. 17, Grifone struck out a season-high 13 batters.
SCOUTING SANT LOUIS
The Billikens enter the weekend with a 2-9 overall record. Saint Louis earned wins over Valparaiso on Feb. 9 and St. Thomas (Minn.) on Feb. 11.
Graduate student Gabbie Kowalik leads the Billikens at the plate this season with 15 hits and a .349 batting average. Freshman Chloe Rhine and sophomore Jane Kaniecki have recorded 12 hits each for Saint Louis tallying four and three runs, respectively.
Graduate student Chloe Wendling has pitched a team-high 47.0 innings for Saint Louis. She has recorded a 4.62 ERA while striking out 39 batters.
SCOUTING LIPSCOMB
The Bison enter the tournament with a 4-7 overall record. Lipscomb went 2-2 last weekend earning two wins over Hofstra.
Senior Presley Leebrick leads the Bison with 12 hits, recording a .333 batting average. Freshman Kaylyn Belfield has tallied seven hits for Lipscomb.
Senior Emily Yakubowoski and redshirt sophomore Laine Barefoot have led the Bison in the circle this season pitching 30.0 and 20.2 innings, respectively. Yakubowski has recorded a 3.73 ERA with a team-high 17 strikeouts. Barefoot has only allowed 10 runs while striking out six batters.
SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE
The Penguins are 2-6 through their first eight games. Youngstown State has earned wins over Norfolk State on Feb. 13 and Lafayette on Feb. 26.
Junior Sara Fessler leads the Penguins recording a .407 batting average with a team-high 11 hits, six runs, and one homerun. Senior Conchetta Rinaldi is close behind tallying eight hits for the Penguins.
Junior Devan Ryan has earned both wins for the Pengiuns in the circle recording a 1.27 ERA through 22.0 innings. She has struck out 17 batters while holding batters to a .267 batting average.
SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY
The Governors enter the weekend with a 3-6 overall record. Before facing the Friars on March 7, Austin Peay will play five games in the WKU Spring Fling from March 3 – March 5.
Senior Gabi Apiag and senior Kendyl Weinzapfel lead Austin Peay at the plate hitting .360 and .333 batting averages, respectively. Apiag has recorded nine hits through 25 at-bats while Weinzapfel has tallied a team-high 10 hits.
Junior Jordan Benefiel has pitched a team-high 38.1 innings for the Governors recording a 3.29 ERA. She has struck out 37 batters in the circle.
ON DECK
The Friars will travel to Queens, N.Y. to kick-off BIG EAST play against St. John's University in a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 10.
