Michael Chabra led the Friars with four goals.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened its 2023 season with a 12-9 victory over Holy Cross in Sunday, Feb. 5. The Friars improve their all-time record against the Crusaders to 17-17.
1st Quarter:
• The Friars got out to a 3-0 lead through the first 8:37 of the game.
• Chris Cusolito scored the opening goal of the game, unassisted, at the 13:39 mark.
• Michael Chabra and Ryan Bell followed with goals at 12:10 and 6:23, respectively.
• Richie Joseph earned his first career point with an assist on Bell's goal.
• Holy Cross cut the deficit to one (3-2) with back-to-back goals.
• Chabra closed the scoring with his second goal of the day with 1:49 to play and was assisted by Patrick McAleavey.
• The Crusaders led in shots (11-10), groundballs (13-7) and won 5-7 face-offs.
2nd Quarter:
• Providence outscored Holy Cross 3-1 in the second quarter and took a 7-3 advantage into halftime.
• Jack Horrigan got the action started with his first goal of the season at the 10:56 mark, assisted by Bell to make the score 5-2.
• Holy Cross scored its only goal of the quarter with 4:14 to play (5-3).
• Cusolito and Bell each scored to close the half.
• Joseph picked up his second assist of the game on Bell's goal with 2:09 remaining.
• At the half, Providence led in shots (19-17), while Holy Cross claimed a 23-13 advantage in groundballs (23-13) and faceoffs (8-11).
3rd Quarter:
• Horrigan opened scoring in the third quarter with 10:41 on the clock, and was assisted by McAleavey. It marked his second assist of the day.
• Chabra followed with his third goal of the day at 10:00, earning his first hat trick of the season and fourth of his career.
• The Crusaders cut the deficit to three (9-6) after back-to-back goals at the end of the third.
• Holy Cross led in shots (10-7), groundballs (9-7) and won 5-6 face-offs in the quarter.
4th Quarter
• Holy Cross outscored Providence 3-1 through the first 12 minutes of action to cut the deficit to one (10-9). The line Friar goal during the opening stretch came from Chabra at 6:29.
• Matt Grillo scored his first goal of the season at 2:18 to bring the lead back to two.
• Horrigan followed a minute later (:59) with his third goal of the game, earning him his first hat trick of the season and fourth of his career, to clinch the win (12-9).
• Providence gained its advantage back in shots (14-8) and edged out the Crusaders in groundballs (9-7) and face-offs (5-7).
Notes:
• Bobby Benson earned his first collegiate win in his head coaching debut with the Friars vs. Holy Cross.
• Graduate student goalkeeper James Corasaniti made his debut in goal with the Friars, registering 15 saves and a .609 save percentage.
• Six additional newcomers earned minutes in today's game, highlighted by Joseph's two assists.
• Four of today's five scorers were multi-goal scorers, led by Chabra's four goals.
• Overall, Providence outshot Holy Cross 40-35, however, Holy Cross was able to get the 39-29 edge in groundballs and won 15-24 face-offs.
What's Next:
• Providence returns to action against Ocean State foe Bryant on Saturday, Feb. 11. The game will be played in Smithfield, R.I. and opening faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
