Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Marquette, 14-13, In Overtime

Richie Joseph registered five points on three goals and two assists for the Friars.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Marquette University, 14-13, in overtime in its BIG EAST opener on Saturday, March 28, in Milwaukee, Wis. Providence fell to 4-7 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play. Marquette improved to 5-4 overall (1-0 BIG EAST). Richie Jospeh (Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the Friars with five points on three goals and two assists. Providence will host its BIG EAST Conference home opener next weekend on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 p.m. against No. 14/14 Georgetown.

1st Quarter:
• Joseph opened the game's scoring action with a goal less than one minute into the game.
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) followed with a goal and gave Providence a 2-0 lead (12:45).
• Marquette responded with its first goal of the day and cut the deficit to 2-1 (10:26).
Parker Kennedy (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) and Chambers scored back-to-back goals and gave the Friars a 4-1 advantage (7:44). It marked Chambers' second goal of the game.
• The Golden Eagles scored consecutive goals and narrowed Providence's lead to 4-3 (3:00).
• With three seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Joseph scored his second goal of the game as Providence took a 5-3 lead into the break.

2nd Quarter:
• Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) got the Friars on the board first in the second quarter with a man-up goal. Providence led 6-3 (13:01).
• Marquette responded with three-straight goals and held Providence scoreless for the remainder of the first half.
• Nolan Rappis scored two of the three goals Golden Eagles, including the game-tying goal with 1:50 to play.
• The teams were tied 6-6 at halftime.
• Marquette outshot Providence 15-12 in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) scored for Providence and gave the Friars a 7-6 lead to open the second half.
• Chambers followed with his third goal of the game and extended the Providence lead to two (7:56).
• Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) and Kennedy scored back-to-back goals for Providence as the Friars capped a 4-0 scoring run and took a 10-6 lead (3:34).
• Marquette closed the quarter with back-to-back goals and inched within two at 10-8 (1:48).
 
4th Quarter:
• Joseph and Lazzaro opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals for the Friars. It marked Joseph's third goal of the game and Lazzaro's fifth man-up goal of the season. Providence led 12-8 (13:24).
• Marquette responded with three-straight goals and cut Providence's lead to one (12-11). Ethan Salvia scored two goals in the stretch.
• Matia found the back of the net for the second time and gave the Friars a late 13-11 advantage (3:11).
• Marquette scored the final two goals of the game, including the game-tying goal with five seconds left to force overtime (13-13).
 
Overtime:
• Marquette controlled the opening faceoff in the extra period.
• Ethan Salvia scored the game-winning goal for Marquette 2:30 into the overtime period.
• It marked Marquette's first lead of the game.
 
Notes:
• Joseph registered a team-high five points on three goals and two assists. Joseph's recorded his fourth hat-trick of the season.
• Joseph is currently tied for seventh on the Friars all-time scoring list and ranks fourth on the all-time goals list. The senior owns 152 points on 113 goals and 39 assists.
• Chambers scored three goals for the Friars. It marked his fifth hat-trick of the season. The junior leads Providence in points (48), is tied for first in goals (23) and leads the team in assists (25).
• Lazzaro and Matia each tallied two goals and one assist for Providence.
• Lazzaro has scored five man-up goals this season. He ranks first in the BIG EAST and is tied for third among NCAA Division I players in man-up goals.
• Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) tied his career high with three assists.
•  Kennedy tallied two goals for Providence.
• Salvia registered a game-high six points on three goals and three assists for Marquette, including the game-winning goal in overtime. Nolan Rappis added a game-high four goals for Marquette.
• The Golden Eagles won 21-of-30 faceoffs in the game, including a 14-17 mark in the second half.
• Providence has lost four games by one goal this season with three of the four losses coming in overtime.  
 
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will return to Providence, R.I., to host its BIG EAST home opener against No. 14/14 Georgetown on Saturday, April 4 at 12:00 p.m. The game will be played on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium and streamed live on ESPN+.
