Men’s Lacrosse Rallies To Defeat Villanova, 10-9, In Overtime

Rhett Chambers scored a hat-trick, including the game-tying and game-winning goals.

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team overcame a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat BIG EAST foe Villanova, 10-9, in overtime on Saturday, April 11, in Villanova, Pa. Providence improved to 5-8 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST play. Villanova fell to 5-6 and 2-1 in BIG EAST play. Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) recorded four points on three goals and one assist. Chambers scored the game-tying and game-winning goals. Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.) recorded a career-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

1st Quarter:
• Villanova opened the game with three-straight goals and took a 3-0 lead through opening 10:33.
• Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.J.) answered with a goal for the Friars that cut the deficit to 3-1 before the end of the quarter (5:09).  

2nd Quarter:
•  After a slow start to the second quarter, Villanova scored back-to-back goals and pushed its lead out to 5-1 (5:33).
• The Friars were held scoreless in the second quarter.
• Villanova recorded eight caused turnovers in the first half.  
• The Wildcats outshot the Friars, 20-16.
 
3rd Quarter:
Chris Jaskiewicz (Winter Park, Fla.) opened the second half with back-to-back goals for the Friars and cut Villanova's lead to 5-3 (9:13).
• The Wildcats answered with a pair of goals and took a 7-3 lead into the fourth quarter (6:37).
 
4th Quarter
Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) opened the fourth with a quick man-up goal getting Providence within 7-4 (14:01).
• Villanova responded with a man-up goal of its own and matched its largest lead of the game at 8-4 (11:14).
• The Friars went on a 3-0 scoring run and narrowed the deficit to one goal with 6:46 remaining. Nate Smith (Avon Lake, Ohio) opened the run with a quick goal off a face-off win. It marked Smith's first career goal. Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) and Chambers capped the run as Providence trailed 8-7.
• The Wildcats responded with a goal and pushed their lead back out to two (4:21).
• Wilkerson scored his second goal of the game for the Friars with 2:48 remaining and made it a one-goal game (9-8).
• With 45 seconds left in regulation, Chambers took a shot from range and scored to tie the game, 9-9, and force overtime.
 
Overtime
• Villanova won the opening face-off of overtime, but Charlie Smith (Matthews, N.C.) forced a turnover and the Friars gained possession.
• Chambers scored the game-winning goal in overtime with 1:44 left in the extra period.
 
Notes:
• Chambers recorded four points on three goals and one assist. It marked the junior's sixth hat-trick of the season. Chambers currently leads the Friars' offense in points (53), goals (27) and assists (26).  
• Chambers scored the game-tying and game-winning goals for Providence.
• Olenik recorded three caused turnovers and a career-high six ground balls. The senior has led the Friars' defense with a team-high 17 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls.
• Brazell tallied four points on one goal and three assists.
• Jaskiewicz and Wilkerson each scored two goals for Providence.
• Richie Jospeh (Longmeadow, Mass.) set a career-high in caused turnovers with three.
Charlie Smith recorded a career-high two caused turnovers.
• Freshman defender Nate Smith scored his first career goal for the Friars.
• Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) made 11 saves on a .550 save percentage.
• Providence outscored Villanova 9-4 in the second half, including a 6-2 advantage in the fourth quarter.
• Villanova's Jack Shoemaker tallied four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
• Villanova goalie Anthony Wilson made 15 saves on a .600 save percentage.
• Luke Raymond paced the Wildcats' offense with four points on three goals and one assist.
• The Friars went 2-2 on man-up opportunities in the win.
• Providence outshot Villanova by a margin of 45-33.
• Villanova recorded 10 caused turnovers to Providence's seven.

WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars return to Providence, R.I. to host their annual senior day on Saturday, April 18 against BIG EAST foe Denver. Opening faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
