The Friars advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game for the second time in program history.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 2-seed Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated No. 3-seed Villanova, 14-7, in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals on Thursday, April 30 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 8-8 on the season, while Villanova concluded its season with a 6-8 mark. Providence will face top-seeded Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship Game on Saturday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I. The final will be televised on ESPNU. 

1ST QUARTER: 

• Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) opened the scoring with 12:20 remaining in the first quarter with his 34th goal of the season, assisted by Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.). With the tally, Chambers tied the Providence College single-season points record (66). The record was previously set by Ryan Bell in back-to-back seasons (2024 and 2025). 

Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) gave Providence a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 8:43 mark. It marked his team-best 35th goal of the year. 

• Villanova scored its first goal of the game, man-up, with 5:21 left in the frame to get within one (2-1). 

• Joseph scored his second goal of the night to give Providence a 3-1 advantage with 1:08 to play. Chambers was credited with the assist, giving him sole possession of the single-season points record (67). 

• The Friars took a 3-1 lead into the intermission. 

2ND QUARTER: 

• Villanova struck first in the second quarter to make it a 3-2 game with 14:25 on the clock. 

• Matia and Chambers scored back-to-back goals at 8:43 and 4:50 to give Providence a 5-2 lead. Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) assisted Matia's goal, while Chambers cashed in unassisted. 

• The Friars maintained their 5-2 lead into halftime. 

• In the first half, the Friars held a 24-17 advantage in shots, including a 14-7 edge in shots on goal. Providence was 0-2 on the extra-man, while Villanova was 1-2. 

3RD QUARTER: 

• Junior defenseman Charlie Smith (Matthews, N.C.) scored his first career goal for Providence just 20 seconds into the third quarter. He launched the shot from roughly 50-yard out into an empty net on the clear. He was assisted by goalkeeper Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ontario). It marked Sterritt's first career point with the Friars. 

• Villanova's Colin Michener responded at the 11:37 mark to get the Wildcats within three (6-3). 

• Providence scored six of the next seven goals to extend its lead to 12-4 with nine-seconds left on the clock. 

• The Friars scored five-unanswered to close the quarter. 

• Brazell scored a career-high four goals during the span, giving him 12 goals overall on the year. 

• Joseph and Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.) were credited with the other two goals in the run. 

• Providence outscored Villanova, 7-2, in the third and carried a 12-4 lead into the fourth quarter. 

4TH QUARTER: 

• Joseph scored his fourth goal of the night at the 11:43 mark of the fourth to provide a nine-goal cushion (13-4).  

• The Wildcats ended a 15-minute scoring drought with a Lucas Newton goal with 8:04 to play (13-5). 

Chris Jaskiewicz (Winter Park, Fla.) responded for the Friars three-minutes later (5:08). It marked his first tally of the game and eighth of the season. He was assisted by Joseph. 

• Villanova scored back-to-back goals at 3:44 and 1:17 to cut the deficit to 14-7. 

• The Friars held on for the 14-7 victory. 

NOTES: 

• The Friars will advance to the BIG EAST Championship game for just the second time in program history.  

• The last trip to the BIG EAST title game was in 2017 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. That year, Providence defeated Villanova, 10-7, in the semifinals.   

• Providence improved to 2-7 all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament, including a 2-1 mark vs. Villanova. 

• The Friars have won four-straight games, marking their longest win streak since 2017. 

• Joseph and Brazell each scored five points on four goals and one assist. 

• Chambers also tallied five points in the victory, having recorded two goals and three assists. 

• Joseph currently ranks fifth all-time in career scoring at Providence with 170 points on 128 goals and 42 assists. 

• Joseph ranks second all-time in career goals at Providence, with 124. 

• Chambers heads into the BIG EAST Championship Game with a Providence College single-season record of 70 points (35 goals / 35 assists). He entered the game with 65 points, trailing Ryan Bell's previous record of 66. Bell set the previous record in back-to-back seasons (2024 and 2025). 

• Sophomore Jack Cooper (East Hampton, N.Y.) was 15-17 (.882) from the faceoff 'X' and picked up a career-high 11 groundballs. 

• Sterritt earned the victory in net for Providence with 14 saves. It marked his eighth double-digit save game of the season. 

• Providence earned a berth to the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship for the fourth-consecutive season. It marks the longest consecutive streak of appearances for the Friars since the league began sponsoring men's lacrosse in 2010. 

WHAT'S NEXT: 

• The Friars will face top-seeded Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship Game on Saturday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The game will be televised on ESPNU. 

• The Hoyas defeated No. 4-seed Denver in the first semifinal of the evening on Thursday, 11-8.
