Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Denver On Senior Day, 8-7, In Overtime To Clinch BIG EAST Tournament Berth

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated the University of Denver on its Senior Day, 8-7, in overtime on Saturday, April 18, in Providence, R.I. Providence improved to 6-8 on the season and 2-2 in BIG EAST play, while Denver fell to 5-7 and 1-3 in BIG EAST play. Providence also clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship with one regular-season game remaining on the schedule. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal in overtime. Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) recorded five points on two goals and three assists.
 
1st Quarter:
• Denver scored the game's first goal at the 8:04 mark in the first quarter and held a 1-0 advantage.
• Joseph responded with his first goal of the day, tying the game at 1-1 (4:14). 
 
2nd Quarter:
• Chambers scored early in the second quarter and gave the Friars their first lead of the game at 2-1 (13:33).
• The teams continued to trade goals as Denver tied the game at 2-2 (5:08).
• Joseph closed the half with a goal on an assist from Chambers to give the Friars a 3-2 advantage at the break (2:40).
• Denver goalkeeper Danny Manning tallied 10 saves in the first half.
• Providence outshot Denver 17-10 in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Denver scored first in the second half and tied the game at 3-3 (9:48).
• The Friars responded with a 3-0 scoring run. Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.) scored first, followed by Chambers and Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.), giving Providence its largest lead of the game at 6-3 (4:46).
• The Pioneers answered with a goal that cut the deficit to two, but Chambers followed with his second goal of the game and gave the Friars a 7-4 advantage (2:08).
 
4th Quarter
• The Pioneers outscored the Friars, 3-0, in the final quarter of regulation. Joe Taraboletti scored back-to-back goals, and Marek Tzagournis tied the game at seven with his second goal of the day (3:18).
• Providence had the last shot of regulation but was stopped as Denver forced overtime.
 
Overtime
• Denver controlled the opening draw in overtime. Providence forced a stop with a shot clock violation.
• Joseph scored the game-winning goal for Providence on a feed from Schmitt with 1:52 to play in overtime.
 
Notes:
• Joseph scored three goals for Providence, including the game-winning goal. It marked the senior's fifth hat-trick of the season.
• Joseph currently ranks sixth on the Friars' all-time scoring list and moved to third on the all-time goals list. The senior owns 158 points on 118 goals and 40 assists.
• Chambers tallied five points on two goals and three assists. It marked the fourth time the junior has recorded three or more assists this season.
• Chambers currently leads the Friars in points (58), goals (29) and assists (29). He owns 98 career points (54 goals / 44 assists) and needs just two to eclipse 100 career points.
Jack Cooper (East Hampton, N.Y.) won 12 of 18 on faceoffs for a .667 win percentage and picked up a career-high five ground balls.
Dean Metzger (Garden City South, N.Y.) and Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.) anchored the Friars' defense, each recording three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
• Providence goalkeeper Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) made nine saves on a .563 save percentage. Six of Sterritt's nine saves came in the second half.
• Matia scored two goals for the Friars. Schmitt added two points on one goal and one assist.
• Denver's Danny Manning made 16 saves on a .667 save percentage.
• Joe Taraboletti and Marek Tzagournis each scored a team-high two goals for the Pioneers.
• Providence outshot Denver 35-28.
• The Friars won 12 of 19 faceoffs.
• Providence generated five caused turnovers to Denver's two.
• Providence Head Coach Bobby Benson now owns the program's only two wins over Denver University.
• Providence has now won back-to-back overtime games and is 2-3 in overtime this season. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will travel to Queens, N.Y., to face BIG EAST foe St. John's on Friday, April 24. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
