Men’s Lacrosse Falls To No. 11/11 Georgetown, 15-8

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 11/11 Georgetown University, 15-8, on Saturday, April 4 in Providence, R.I. Providence fell to 4-8 on the season and 0-2 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown improved to 5-4 and 2-0 in BIG EAST play. Freshman Jack Bonello (Great Falls, Va.) recorded three points on a career-best two goals and one assist. Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) won 17 face-offs with a .680 win percentage and picked up 10 ground balls.
1st Quarter:
• Bonello opened the game's scoring action and gave the Friars an early lead (11:59).
• Georgetown responded with back-to-back goals and GU took a 2-1 lead (4:27).
Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) answered with a goal for the Friars and tied the game at two before the break (1:24).
2nd Quarter:
• Georgetown outscored the Friars 4-0 in the second quarter and took a 5-2 advantage. Rory Connor and Liam Connor each scored goals in the run.
• The Friars went 8-10 on face-offs in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Georgetown extended its scoring run to 6-0 and took an 8-2 lead (10:47). Rory Connor capped the run with his third goal of the game.
• Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) responded with a goal for the Friars. Providence trailed, 8-3 (10:10).
• Georgetown continued its dominance on offense as the Hoyas went on a 3-0 run and extended its lead to 11-3 (8:55). Liam Connor scored two goals in the run.
• Bonello scored his second goal of the game as Providence trailed 11-4 (2:55).
 
4th Quarter
• The Hoyas got on the board first in the final quarter. Brady Garcia (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) responded with a goal for Providence on a feed from Bonello. Georgetown held a 12-5 advantage (12:00).
• Liam Connor continued to produce for Georgetown with back-to-back goals and extended the deficit to 14-5 (5:47).
• The Friars made a late push and sparked a 3-0 run with under four minutes remaining. Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) scored first, followed by Joseph and Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.). Providence trailed 14-8 (1:48).
• The Hoyas scored with 39 seconds remaining and earned a 15-8 win.
 
Notes:
• Bonello recorded three points on a career-best two goals and one assist.
• Joseph scored two goals for the Friars.  
• Joseph is currently tied for sixth on the Friars all-time scoring list and ranks fourth on the all-time goals list. The senior owns 154 points on 115 goals and 39 assists.
• Esposito went 17-25 on face-offs with a .680 win percentage and picked up 10 ground balls.
• Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.) recorded a career-high six ground balls and registered one caused turnover.
• Liam Connor scored six points on five goals and one assist for Georgetown. Rory Connor added three goals and one assist.
• Georgetown goalie Anderson Moore made 13 saves on a .619 save percentage.
• Georgetown recorded eight caused turnovers to the Friars' five.
• Each team tallied 37 shots despite the seven-goal deficit. Each side also recorded four assists.
• Providence recorded 32 groundballs to Georgetown's 26.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will travel to Villanova, Pa., to face Villanova on Saturday, April 11, at 3:30 p.m. The game will be played at Villanova Stadium and streamed on ESPN+.
