Men's Lacrosse Travels To Bryant

Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11

PROVIDENCE TRAVELS TO BRYANT… The Providence College men's lacrosse team will travel to Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday, Feb. 11 to face Ocean State foe Bryant University in non-conference action.

SERIES BREAKDOWN… Since 1980, the Friars and Bulldogs have met 19 times. Bryant leads the all-time series, 10-9. The Friars have gone 3-3 against the Bulldogs in their last six match-ups.
 
MOST RECENT MEETING... The teams last met during the 2022 campaign on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Providence fell to Bryant, 19-7 and had seven different players score throughout the game.
 
OCEAN STATE CUP... The Friars' game against Bryant marks the first of two games in the annual Ocean State Cup. Providence will face Brown on Feb. 21. The cross-city match-up is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Brown's campus at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
 
Bryant will play at Brown on Tuesday, April 25 to close out the Ocean State Cup.
 
Providence was last crowned Ocean State Cup Champion during the 2020 season. Providence defeated Bryant, 16-9, and Brown, 13-12, in overtime.
 
PROVIDENCE POWERS PAST HOLY CROSS... Providence got out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed en route to a 12-9 victory in the season opener vs. Holy Cross on Feb. 5 at Anderson Stadium. The match-up was featured by Lax.com as the organization's first-ever Game of the Week.
 
Michael Chabra and Jack Horrigan each recorded hat tricks in the game. Chabra finished with four goals, while Horrigan tallied three. 
 
Patrick McAleavey and Richie Joseph each tallied a game-high two assists. James Corasaniti, a graduate transfer from Fairfield University, made his debut with the Friars in goal and earned the win with 15 saves. 
 
MICHAEL CHABRA AND RYAN BELL EARN BIG EAST WEEKLY HONORS... Michael Chabra and Ryan Bell each earned BIG EAST Weekly Honors on Feb. 6, following the team's season-opening victory over Holy Cross. Chabra was named Midfielder of the Week, while Bell was featured on the Honor Roll.
 
Chabra tallied four points vs. Holy Cross and came out of the gate strong, scoring two of his four goals in the first quarter, and added two second-half goals. It marked his first hat trick of the season and fourth of his career.
 
Bell registered three points on two goals and one assist. The sophomore midfielder also picked up four groundballs. Bell was the Friars' leader in assists last season (34) and finished second on the team in scoring with 43 points.
 
MATT GRILLO MAKES PROGRAM HISTORY… Matt Grillo has amassed 110 career goals. Grillo ranks third all-time at Providence in career goals, behind Ed Loiselle '92 (136) and Ken Leahy '00 (112). Grillo also is tied for 13th in program history in career scoring, with 136 points. Leahy is the Friars' all-time leading scorer with 188 points on 112 goals and 76 assists.
 
PROGRAM BEGINS BOBBY BENSON ERA… The Friars welcome a new coaching staff for the 2023 season led by Head Coach Bobby Benson. Benson spent the last two seasons at Maryland as the offensive coordinator during the Terps' run to the NCAA title in 2022. Maryland registered a 33-1 record during Benson's two seasons in College Park, earned two Big Ten Championships and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship game. Before joining the Terps, Benson spent 14 seasons as the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins. He helped Hopkins to 11 NCAA appearances, eight quarterfinal bids, three Final Fours and two National Championship games.
 
MEET THE STAFF... Casey Brodersen, who spent the last 12 seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Bryant University, was hired by Bobby Benson to serve as Associate Head Coach at Providence. He helped the Bulldogs to six Northeast Conference titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Carroll Kennedy joined the Friars as an Assistant Coach. Kennedy worked alongside Benson at Maryland during the 2022 season and was previously named USILA Assistant Coach of the Year while at Limestone University in 2015. Colin Munro joined the staff as a Volunteer Assistant after completing his collegiate career at fellow BIG EAST Conference member, Georgetown, in 2022.
 
KEY RETURNERS… Providence will lean on key returners as the 2023 season picks up. Graduate student Matt Grillo returns for his final season after leading the team in goals (36), shots (114) and points (45) during the 2022 season. Grillo was recognized as an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. Michael Chabra returns for his junior season after finishing fourth on the team in scoring with 27 points on 25 goals and two assists. Ryan Bell will look to build off his success as a rookie in 2022 after finishing the season ranked 13th in the nation in assists per game (2.43). He finished second on the team in scoring with 43 points on nine goals and a team-best 34 assists.
 
Senior Grant Latimer will anchor the Providence defense. Latimer started all 14 games for the Friars last season and recorded 10 caused turnovers and 21 groundballs.
 
WELCOME TO FRIARTOWN… The Friars welcomed 14 freshmen to the men's lacrosse program in the fall of 2022. Newcomers include Tyler Flynn (Setauket, N.Y.), Dean Metzger (Garden City South, N.Y.), Harrison Sweeney (West Hartford, Conn.), Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.),  Jackson Coutu (Upton, Mass.), Eddie Perry (Bridgewater, Mass.), Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.), Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.), Eric Webb (Westfield, N.J.), Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.), Frankie Carroll (East Setauket, N.Y.), Chris Harland (Milton, Ontario), Tom Sarni (Lynnfield, Mass.), and Cullen Mulhern (Lawrenceville, N.J.).
 
Additionally, four transfers joined the Friars roster upon Bobby Benson's arrival as Head Coach. James Corasaniti (New York, N.Y.), a graduate transfer from Fairfield University, and Patrick Yowan (Manchester, Vt.) a sophomore transfer from Loyola Maryland highlight the goaltending unit. Sophomores Pierce Gregory (Sherborn, Mass.) and Vincent Horton (Scituate, Mass.) come to Providence after playing at Bryant University as rookies in 2022.
 
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2023 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll (9 points). Georgetown was picked to win the league, having collected five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Denver (20 points) was second and Villanova, who received one first-place vote and 18 points was selected third. Rounding out the conference standings was Marquette (13 points) in fourth and St. John's (five points) in sixth.
 
SCOUTING BRYANT… The Bulldogs closed out the 2022 season with an 8-7 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the Northeast Conference. Bryant averaged 12.01 goals and 45 shots per game. This year, the Bulldogs were selected to finish fourth in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll in their first season with the conference.
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH…Midfielders Aidan Goltz and Timmy Hackett, will return for the 2023 season. Goltz finished last season ranked fourth on the team in goals (18) and fifth in scoring (21 points). Hackett finished fourth in scoring (25 points) consisting of 15 goals and 10 assists.
 
Sophomore defender Tanner Alexander will also be in the mix for the Bulldogs. Last season, Alexander was key to the Bulldog's defense tallying 15 caused turnovers and collecting 35 groundballs. The sophomore ranked second on the team in both of those categories.
 
COACHING NOTES... Current Providence College Associate Head Coach Casey Brodersen spent the previous 12 season on the Bryant University staff before joining Friar Head Coach Bobby Benson on the sidelines in Friartown. During his time at Bryant, he helped the Bulldogs to six Northeast Conference titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances.  Former Providence College Head Coach Chris Gabrielli is in his first season at Bryant as an assistant coach / defensive coordinator. Gabrielli spent the previous 10 seasons at Providence College before joining Head Coach Brad Ross' staff.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will host Siena on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 12:00 p.m.
