Smithfield, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to Ocean State rival, Bryant University, 15-13, on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Smithfield, R.I.
1st Quarter:
- Bryant opened scoring with two goals early in the first quarter.
- Ryan Bell put the Friars on the board at the 8:87 mark, unassisted.
- John Hoffman tied things up with a goal late in the shot clock, with 5:42 to go in the quarter.
- Bryant closed the quarter with two goals to take a 4-2 lead into the break.
- The Friars led in groundballs (5-4) and won 4-7 face-offs. Bryant outshot the Providence 12-9.
2nd Quarter:
- The Friars' defense kept the Bulldogs scoreless throughout the first 12 minutes of the quarter.
- Michael Chabra netted the first goal of the second quarter with a strong shot from deep (11:40).
- Chad Cannon followed with a man-down goal at the 7:06 mark, off an assist from Bell. It marked Cannon's first career-goal.
- Bell got back in the scoring column at the 5:09 mark to give Providence its first lead of the game (5-4).
- The Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals in the last minute to put them back up by two going into half (7-5).
- At halftime, Bryant led in shots (33-15), groundballs (15-10) and won 9-14 face-offs.
- James Corasaniti recorded 13 saves for Providence in the opening 30 minutes and compiled a .650 save percentage.
3rd Quarter
- After Jack Horrigan's early goal at 14:31, with the assist from Bell, the Friars were held scoreless until six minutes remained in the quarter.
- Bryant used that time to expand their lead to four (10-6) with three goals.
- Patrick McAleavey cut the 3-0 Bulldog run short at 6:20 off an assist from Bell (10-7).
- Bell and Horrigan scored the last two Friar goals of the quarter at 2:59 and 1:34, respectively, to close the quarter down five (14-9). Horrigan was aided by an assist from McAleavey.
- Bell earned his first hat trick of the season and second of his career and entered the final 15 minutes with a team-high six points.
4th Quarter
- The Friars had a dominant fourth quarter as they outscored Bryant 5-1.
- Bell contributed three goals, at 9:47, 4:32, and :13, respectively.
- Horrigan notched his second hat trick of the season at 10:37. Bell registered his fourth assist of the day on the goal.
Notes:
- Bell led all scorers with a career-high 10 points. The sophomore tallied a career-high six goals and added four assists.
- Horrigan notched his second hat trick of the season, scoring each of his three goals in the second half.
- Overall, Bryant outshot Providence, 52-31, and led the Friars in groundballs (40-19). The Bulldogs also won 23-33 face-offs.
- Corasaniti collected a season-high 18 saves.
What's Next:
Providence will return to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 11 as the Friars welcome Siena College. Face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
