Short-Handed Friars Fall To Iona, 61-49

Olivia Olsen recorded her second double-double of the season on 13 points and 12 rebounds.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Iona, 61-49, on Dec. 2 in Providence, R.I. The Friars were short-handed for the second-straight game due to injuries and dropped to 3-5 on the season. Iona evened its record with the win at 3-3.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The game was tied, 8-8, at the first media timeout (4:34) as Kendall Eddy and Olivia Olsen each scored four points for the Friars.
• The Friars' defense held Iona scoreless for just over two minutes late in the quarter and gained a four-point advantage (17-13).
• At the break, Providence led 17-15.
• Eddy paced the squad in scoring with seven points on 3-3 shooting from the field.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars' defense held Iona scoreless for 3:53 heading into the media timeout and scored six-straight points to take a 25-18 lead.
• Providence extended its lead to double-digits (30-20) on a three-point bucket by Laryn Edwards with 3:17 on the clock.
• Iona finished the quarter with a 6-3 edge in the scoring column and Providence took a 33-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Eddy cracked double-digits for the first time in her career with 10 points at the half.
• Natalia Otkhmezuri paced the Gaels with 12 points in the opening 20 minutes.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Iona closed the deficit to 33-32 with a 6-0 start in the third.
Brynn Farrell got the Friars on the board with a pair of free throws at 4:47 (35-32).
• The Gaels answered with 11-straight points over the final 4:28 of the quarter.
• Providence was held without a field goal in the quarter (0-17) and was outscored 17-2 overall.
• Iona took a 43-35 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Olsen scored from the left block on the Friars' first offensive possession of the fourth. It marked the first field goal for Providence since 57-seconds left in the second quarter.
• Iona led 51-41 at the media timeout (51-41).
• The Friars scored five-straight points to get within six with 1:49 to play (55-49).
• The Gaels finished the game with 6-0 scoring advantage to take a 61-49 victory.
 
NOTES:
• Olsen paced the Friars with 13 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and sixth of her career.
• Eddy finished with a career-best 12 points.
• Providence dominated the glass with a 47-30 advantage in rebounding. The Friars' 47 boards marked a season-high.
• The Friars were short-handed on the day, playing for the second-straight game without starting guards Kylee Sheppard and Grace Efosa [injuries].
• Otkhmezuri (21 points) and Noa Givon (20 points) led Iona's offense.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 6 against intrastate rival Rhode Island. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
