Friars Defeat Rams In Ocean State Match-Up, 51-50

Olivia Olsen netted a team-best 14 points and added seven rebounds.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated intrastate rival Rhode Island, 51-50, on Dec. 6 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved their record to 4-5, while the Rams dropped to 6-4 on the season.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence jumped out to an 10-2 lead through the first 4:19 of the game.
• The Friars extended their lead to 15-6, but the Rams responded with a 10-4 run to get within three (19-16).
• Sarah Bandoma closed the quarter with a lay-in at the right bloc to give Providence a 21-16 lead at the break.
• Olivia Olsen paced all scorers with nine points in the first quarter and grabbed four rebounds.
2ND QUARTER:
• Olsen cracked double digits in the scoring column with the first bucket of the second quarter at the 9:06 mark.
• The Rams responded with a 14-1 run to take a 30-24 lead with 2:16 remaining in the half.
• Providence closed the quarter with a 4-2 spurt.
• The Rams took a 32-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Olsen paced the Friars with 11 points and Teisha Hyman led the Rams with 11.
3RD QUARTER:
• Olsen hit 3-4 free throws in the opening minute to get Providence within one (32-31).
• The score remained unchanged for the next 3:25 until Hyman converted a lay-up for URI to spark a 5-0 run (37-31).
• Providence answered with an 8-0 run to regain the lead at the 2:44 mark (39-37).
• The two teams were deadlocked at 42-42 heading into the final 10 minutes.
4TH QUARTER:
• The game was knotted at 48-48 heading into the fourth quarter media (4:22).
• Emily Archibald drained a triple with 2:03 to play to give the Friars a 51-50 lead.
• Providence had an opportunity to take a three-point lead at the foul line with 9.2-seconds left on the clock but missed both attempts.
• URI called timeout to advance the ball, but Hyman's shot to win the game was off the mark.
• The Friars held the Rams scoreless for the final 3:11 of the game.
NOTES:
• Olsen was the lone Friar in double figures with 14 points. She also added seven rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocked shots.
• Marta Morales Romero finished the night with nine points and a career-high nine rebounds. She also added three assists and one block.
• Bandoma scored a season-high eight points, including six points during a pivotal third quarter stretch.
• Archibald had a solid night for the Friars, including the three pointer that proved to be the game winner. She finished with six points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a career-best three blocked shots.
• Hyman led Rhode Island with 18 points, while Maye Toure recorded a double-double (11 points/11 rebounds).
• The Friars held URI to 26.2-percent shooting from the field in the game (16-61).
• Providence shot 40-percent from the floor as a team (20-50).
• The Friars snapped a two-game winless streak against URI with tonight's victory and now lead the all-time series, 40-14.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 against Yale. The game will be played at the John J. Lee Amphitheater in New Haven, Conn. and tip-off is slated for Noon. A live broadcast of the game will be available on ESPN+.
