Women's Hoops Defeats New Haven In Exhibition Action

Friars officially open the season on Tuesday, Nov. 1 against Hampton at 7:00 p.m.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball program opened a new era of Friar basketball with a 75-55 victory over New Haven in exhibition play on Nov. 1 in Providence, R.I. Senior Grace Efosa paced four Friars in double figures with a game-high 24 points.
1ST QUARTER:
• Efosa scored off the tip, but Providence missed its next seven attempts from the floor.
• Ugne Sirtautaite halted the drought as she converted a traditional three-point play with 5:34 on the clock.
• The Friars led 8-5 at the media timeout (3:48).
• New Haven used a 5-0 spurt late in the quarter to take a 15-10 lead.
• The Chargers led 16-12 at the quarter break.
2ND QUARTER:
• New Haven took a 19-14 lead, but the Friars regained the lead with an 8-1 run (22-20).
• The Friars trailed 31-26 with 2:10 to play.
• Providence forced three turnovers and closed the half on a 7-2 run to tie the game, 33-33.
• Ugne Sirtautaite led the Friars in the first half with nine points and six rebounds. Five of her six boards came off the offensive glass.
• Lindsay Hogan paced New Haven with 16 first-half points.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars used a 13-4 run to claim a 46-38 lead with 4:26 on the clock.
• Providence earned the first double-digit lead of the night with 2:42 remaining on the clock, after Grace Efosa converted a traditional three-point play.
• New Haven closed the quarter with a 5-1 spurt, including a three at the buzzer.
• Providence carried a 54-46 lead into the fourth.
4TH QUARTER:
• New Haven started the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to force a Providence timeout with 7:43 on the clock.
• Olivia Olsen halted the drought with a lay-up to spark a 18-0 Friar run during a span of 5:17 (72-53).
• New Haven's seven-minute drought ended with 43-seconds left in the game as Hogan hit a runner (72-55).
• Providence went on to claim a 75-55 victory.
NOTES:
• Providence's defense forced 21 turnovers and recorded 16 steals on the night.
• The Friars outscored the Chargers 33-14 in points off turnovers.
• Providence also dominated the paint, outscoring New Haven 42-22 in the lane.
• Providence shot just 27-percent in the first quarter (5-18), but shot over 50-percent during the remaining three quarters of play. Overall, the Friars were 50-percent from the floor (28-56).
• Efosa paced all scorers with 24 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Sixteen of her 24 points came in the second half. She also picked up six steals.
• Olsen added 17 points, six boards and three steals.
• Sirtautaite finished the night with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Six of her boards came off the offensive glass.
• Kylee Sheppard rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points and contributed five boards, three assists and a game-high seven steals.
