Friars Begin Erin Batth Era With 76-46 Victory Over Hampton

Olivia Olsen and Grace Efosa combined for 46 points to pace the offense.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Hampton in its 2023-24 season opener, 76-46, on Nov. 7 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. It marked the first career head coaching victory for Erin Batth, who took over the program last March. Olivia Olsen and Grace Efosa combined to score 46 points, equaling the Pirates' scoring output for the game. The Friars improved to 1-0, while Hampton dropped to 0-1.

 1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars started the game on a 9-0 run to force a Hampton timeout with 8:21 on the clock.
• Providence extended its lead to 13-2 midway through the quarter (5:00).
• Providence went without a field goal during the final 2:56 of the quarter and scored three points from the foul line.
• Providence led 24-10 at the break.
• Olsen and Marta Morales Romero combined or 15 of the Friars' 24 points. 
• Olsen was 2-2 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line, while Morales Romero was 2-2 from the field and 2-2 from the line.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence used a 6-0 spurt during a span of 1:19 to take a 38-16 lead with 3:14 on the clock.
• The Friars were scoreless for 2:47 until Sarah Bandoma hit one of two free throws with 26-seconds remaining (39-20).
• Morales Romero paced three Friars in double figures at halftime, with 13 points.
• Olsen and Grace Efosa each recorded 10 first-half points.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence outscored Hampton 15-11 leading into the media timeout to take a 54-31 lead with 4:05 to play.
• With 3:47 remaining in the third, Olsen had set a new career high in the scoring column with 23 points.
• The Friars carried a 61-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Hampton started the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run before Efosa sank a pair of free throws for the Friars' first points with 6:06 remaining (63-40).
• Providence outscored the Pirates 15-12 overall in the quarter enroute to its 76-46 victory.
 
 
NOTES:
• Olsen finished the night with a career-high 25 points on 9-11 shooting from the field and a 7-7 performance from the foul line.  She also hauled in a game-high eight boards and added two assists and two blocked shots.
• Efosa scored 21 points, eclipsing the 20-point mark for just the second time in her career. She shot 6-7 from the floor and was 8-9 from the foul line.
• Olsen and Efosa are the first duo to score 20+ points in the same game since March 21, 2019 [Jovana Nogic (27) and Mary Baskerville (22) vs. Hartford].
• Morales Romero posted 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in her first game as a Friar.
Kylee Sheppard dished a career-high eight assists in the game and the Friars finished with 19 assists as a team.
• The Friars outrebounded the Pirates, 41-24, and also held a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint.
• Providence improved to 30-20 all-time in season openers and 34-16 all-time in home openers.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Friday, Nov. 10 against Vermont (1-0). Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
