Friars Hold Off Vermont To Claim 57-47 Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 57-47 victory over reigning America East Champion Vermont on Friday, Nov. 10 in Providence, R.I. Olivia Olsen paced the Friars with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
1ST QUARTER:
• Kylee Sheppard tied the game, 7-7, with a traditional three-point play, but Vermont responded with seven-straight points to take a 14-7 lead at the 4:15 mark.
• Providence trailed 16-9 with 3:31 on the clock but finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to get within one (18-17).
• Sheppard and Brynn Farrell each scored five points in the opening 10 minutes
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 26-18 lead with 7:55 remaining on the clock.
• The Catamounts hit a three out of a timeout to stem the tide.
• Providence went cold from the floor for 2:45 before Olsen scored six-straight points to put the Friars ahead 34-25 with 2:13 on the clock.
• A Marta Morales Romero three-pointer at the 1:10 mark extended the Friars' run to 9-0 to close out the half (37-25).
• Providence shot 48.3-percent from the field in the first half (14-29), while the Catamounts converted 30.8-percent from the floor (10-33).
• Olsen recorded 12 points and six boards in the first half.
• Emma Utterback tallied 10 points for the Catamounts in the opening 20 minutes.
3RD QUARTER:
• Vermont held a slim 6-4 scoring advantage through the first 5:17 of the third quarter to make it a 10-point game heading into the media timeout.
• A 6-0 run by the Friars late in the quarter pushed the lead to 47-31 with 2:03 to play.
• Vermont answered with a 6-0 run in a span of 1:07 to cut the deficit to 10, but Sheppard hit a floater in the final seconds to give the Friars a 49-37 lead heading into the fourth.
4TH QUARTER:
• Vermont cut the lead to two (49-47) after starting the frame with a 10-0 scoring edge.
• Providence hit its first field goal of the quarter with 3:06 remaining on a short baseline jumper by Grace Efosa. Her bucket sparked an 8-0 run over the final three-minutes to give PC the 57-47 win.
NOTES:
• Olsen finished the night with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds. She also recorded a season high four blocked shots and two steals.
• Sheppard contributed 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocked shots.
• Efosa and Farrell each scored 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
• Morales Romero chipped in eight points, five boards and a career-high five assists. In 36 minutes of action, she did not commit a turnover.
• The battle on the glass was even, with each team grabbing 39 rebounds.
• Providence committed 13 turnovers, while the Catamounts finished with 16 miscues.
• The Friars were opportunistic, outscoring Vermont 24-5 in points off turnovers.
• Utterback was the lone Catamount in double figures with 15 points. She also recorded seven assists and five rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 15 in a cross-city match-up against Brown University. The game will be played at the Pizzitola Sports Center and is scheduled to tipoff at 7:00 p.m. A live stream of the action will be available on ESPN+.
