Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Sacred Heart, 16-12

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Matt Grillo recorded a team-high five goals as the Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Sacred Heart, 16-12, on Tuesday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Providence got on the board first, 1-0, just 56 seconds into play with a goal from Jack Horrigan.
• The Pioneers responded with their own goal, 1-1, before the Friars went on to score four more goals to close out the first quarter, 5-1.
Matt Grillo, Drew Edwards, Ryan Bell all netted one goal and Jack Horrigan netted two through the opening 15 minutes.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• Providence opened the second quarter strong, scoring five consecutive goals.
Sacred Heart made it 10-2 with a goal at 4:16.
Captain Mike O'Grady responded 1:01 later, 11-2, with his first goal of the season before the Pioneers netted two more to end the quarter.
Jack Horrigan earned his second career hat trick and Grillo earned his 16th career hat trick in the quarter. Michael Chabra also got on the board for the Friars on the man-up.
The Friars entered the half with an 11-4 advantage.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• The Pioneers started the quarter with three-consecutive goals, cutting into the Friars lead, 11-7.
Chabra, Chris Cusolito and Hoffman followed Sacred Heart's run with goals of their own to make it 14-7 before the Pioneers scored once more, 14-8, heading into the fourth quarter.  
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Pioneers outscored the Friars by a 4-2 margin in the final quarter, but the Friar's early lead helped Providence prevail, 16-12.
• Grillo and Evan McGreen both scored for Providence in the final 15 minutes of play.

GAME NOTES:
• Grillo registered a team-high five goals on his 16th-career hat trick. Horrigan secured his second career hat trick.
Matt Murakami earned his first win in net for Providence.
Richie Hughson recorded a team-high 18 ground balls.
• Providence dominated in the X, winning 72% of face-offs.
• The Friars earned their first home win of 2022 and improved to 3-3 this season.

SHU – Alex Pazienza (L) - 8 saves, 10 goals against, .444 save percentage
