PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph's, 15-8, on Feb. 26 at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Providence dropped to 2-2 on the year, while the Hawks moved to 3-1 on the season.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars took a 2-0 lead to start the game with back-to-back goals by
Matt Grillo (14:03) and
Michael Chabra (11:24). Grillo's goal was assisted by
Evan McGreen.
• The Hawks answered with four-straight goals to take a 4-2 lead with 6:56 on the clock.
• Chabra and Grillo went back-to-back for a second time in the quarter to even the score, 4-4.
• Grillo also picked up an assist as he fed Chabra with 4:26 on the clock. He then followed with his second goal of the day at the 1:39 mark.
• Saint Joseph's closed the quarter with two goals in the final 1:08, including a closing tally with three-seconds remaining.
• At the conclusion of the first quarter, the Hawks held a 6-4 lead.
2ND QUARTER:
• The Hawks gained control of the game with a 5-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter.
• Saint Joseph's scored the first three goals in the frame to gain a 9-4 advantage before Grillo stemmed the tide with his 14th career hat trick with 4:19 on the clock.
• The Hawks finished the quarter with a pair of goals from Carter Page to make it an 11-5 game at halftime.
3RD QUARTER:
• Both teams managed to score two goals in the third quarter, allowing for Saint Joseph's to maintain their six-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter.
• McGreen and
Ryan Bell were credited with the Friars' tallies in the third, both of which were unassisted.
4TH QUARTER:
• Saint Joseph's scored two goals to open the fourth quarter at the 12:53 and 7:53 marks.
• The Friars were held scoreless until McGreen found the back of the net during a man-up opportunity, assisted by Bell, with 5:26 to play.
• McGreen's goal was the final scoring play for either team the rest of the way as Saint Joseph's picked up the 15-8 win.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Grillo recorded his 14th career hat trick as he finished the day with three goals and one assist.
• McGreen paced the Friars' offense with two goals and two assists.
• The Hawks were able to capitalize on an impressive day at the face-off 'X', winning 23-of-27 opportunities. All-American Zach Cole was responsible for each of Saint Joseph's face-offs.
• The Hawks held a 47-34 advantage in shots and a 38-18 edge in ground balls. Cole was credited with 18 of the Hawks' 47 groundballs by virtue of his performance at the 'X'.
•
Michael Harris took the loss in goal for Providence, allowing 11 goals, while making eight saves.
•
Matt Murakami made seven saves for the Friars in the second half and allowed four goals.
• Tucker Almany earned the win with 10 saves for SJU. He played all 60 minutes.
