PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST announced on Tuesday (Sept. 28) its weekly cross country awards. Graduate student
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) were both named BIG EAST Athletes of the Week for their respective performances at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday, Sept. 24.
Rocha takes cross country honors for the second time this season after helping the Friars finish in fifth place at the Coast to Coast Battle of Beantown. The graduate student kept pace among the top 10 runners and finished the 8K run in seventh place in time of 24:15. Rocha has led his team in both races this fall.
Similarly, Mooney led the women's side at the Battle of Beantown. Mooney maintained a top ten position throughout the duration of the race and finished strong with an eighth-place finish in a time of 17:21. She led to Friars to a second-place finish behind No. 13 North Carolina (63 points) and ahead of Duke (115 points) and No. 22 UConn (122 points).
The Friars will return to Franklin Park on Saturday, October 9 for the New England Championships, at noon.
