ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the annual Friar Invitational on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. The seventh-ranked Friar women scored 20 points and placed first overall defeating Boston University (second - 46 points), Dartmouth (third - 81 points) and Brown (fourth – 83 points). PC sophomore Gabby Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia) won the 4 K race in a time of 14:07.82. The Friar men finished fifth (80 points) in the 6 K race and were led by sophomore
Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland), who placed eighth (18:42.58).

After Schmidt, senior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) and freshman
Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand) finished second and third, respectively. Laverty ran a time of 14:29.18 and Currie finished the four kilometers in 14:34.43. Senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) and freshman
Emilia O'Leary (East Aurora, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for PC. O'Mahony placed sixth (14:45.53) and O'Leary was eighth (14:56.14).
"Happy for the women's team, it was a strong start to the season," Head Coach
Ray Treacy said. "It was great season opening race for Gabby [Schmidt]. Now we will look to build from this."
In addition to Dixon, also finishing in the top-13 for the men's team were sophomore
Ryan LoCicero (Bloomfield, N.J.), who was 12
th (18:47.97), and sophomore
Daniel Prescott (Christchurch, New Zealand), who placed 13
th (18:49.94). Also scoring for the Friars were sophomore
Elliott Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand) and junior
Will Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand). Pugh was 19
th (19:07.77) and Johnston was 29
th (19:28.42).
The Friars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3 at the Sean Earl Lake Front Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
