PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's cross country team will compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Saturday, November 22. The race will be held at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo. The women's 6k race will begin at 10:20 a.m. EST.

The Friar women will be returning to the NCAA Championship for the fifth consecutive year and 33rd time in program history. At the 2024 championship, the Friars earned a third place finish out of 31 teams. It marked the seventh time in program history the Friars have finished in the top three all-time at the NCAAs. It also was the team's highest finish since finishing first in 2013. The Friar women's team has won the NCAA title twice in program history, in 1995 and 2013. In 2004, former Friar Kim Smith won the NCAA Championship and became the only individual winner in the history of the women's program.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Fourteen additional teams were selected at-large.
The Friars qualified automatically for the NCAA Championship after placing second at the 2025 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Nov. 14. at Hopkinton Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. The Friar women's team placed second of 37 teams and was led by senior sophomore
Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland) who finished sixth (20:04.2) of 251 runners.
After Gardiner, leading the way for the women at the NCAA Regional was senior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) and sophomore Gabby Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia). Laverty and Schmidt placed seventh (20:11.3) and ninth (20:15.6), respectively. Rounding out the scoring for the Friars was senior Níamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) (24
th, 20:32.9) and freshman
Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand) (25
th, 20:34.3).
Gardiner, Laverty, Schmidt, O'Mahony and Currie all earned NCAA All-Northeast Region honors by finishing in the top 25.
Also expected to compete at the NCAA Championships will be senior
Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland) and sophomore
Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
