Cross Country Competes At New England Championship

PC women won the team title and Niamh O’Mahony captured the women’s individual title.

HOPKINTON, N.H. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the New England Championship on Friday, Oct. 10 at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. The Friar women scored 67 points and placed first overall to defeat 24 teams.  It marked the 12th time the Friar women won the New England title. PC was led senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland), who won women's 5k race in a time of 17:08.18.  It marked the 10th time a PC women's runner had won the individual title and the first since Roisin McGettigan in 2001. The Friar men had four runners compete in the 8k race and were led by senior Grady Satterfield (Bowdoinham, Maine), who placed 52nd  (25:37.47).  It was the 112th running of the New England Men's Cross Country Championship and the 51st running of the Women's Championship.

In addition to O'Mahony, sophomore Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and freshman Emilia O'Leary (East Aurora, N.Y.) also placed in the top 10 for the Friars.  Bush was fifth (17:35.24) and O'Leary placed eighth (17:44.34).  Freshman Lucia West (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior Shea Podbelski (Norton, Mass.) also scored for PC.  West finished 18th (18:14.40) and Podbelski rounded out the scoring, placing 35th (18:35.62).
 
The Friars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 17 when the women's team heads to the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wis. and the men compete at the Princeton Fall Classic in Princeton, N.J.
