The Friar women finished second while the men finished fifth.
BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown at Franklin Park against several nationally and regionally ranked teams on Friday, September 25. The Friar women finished second out of 22 teams (82 points). The men finished fifth out of 20 teams (151 points).
The women's side was led by Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland). Mooney maintained a top ten position throughout the duration of the race and finished strong with an eighth-place finish in a time of 17:21. Fellow Friars Lily Tuck (Sunderland, Canada), Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.), and Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) also held positions towards the head of the pack for the duration of the race. Tuck, Coffin and Flockhart all tabbed top-20 finishes, placing 14th (17:32), 15th (17:32), and 18th (17:36), respectively. Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) finished 27th, in a time of 17:43. Providence placed second behind No. 13 North Carolina (63 points) and ahead of Duke (115 points) and No. 22 UConn (122 points).
For the men, the Friars were led by a seventh place finish (24:15) by Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.). Graduate student David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland) and Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) finished the Battle of Beantown in 23rd (24:54) and 33rd (25:02) place, respectively. Rounding out the Friars top five were sophomore Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) in 25:11 and graduate student AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) in 25:18. No. 6 Arkansas claimed the race with 39 points.
The Friars will return to Franklin Park on Saturday, October 9 for the New England Championships, at noon.
