PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Tori Grifrone (Sussex, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Softball Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday, April 26. Graduate student
Sarah Gunderson (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and junior
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) were also recognized, and named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. This marks the first BIG EAST weekly recognition for Grifone and Gunderson, and the first of the season for Alvarez.
Grifone went 4-for-7 at the plate this weekend in a three-game series against Butler. She posted a .571 batting average with a double, home run and four RBI. Grifone has had a strong start to her rookie season, leading the team in batting percentage (.278), hits (10) and RBI (5) through the team's first 16 games. The rookie also pitched two innings on Saturday, striking out four and not allowing an extra-base hit.
Gunderson posed a 1.97 ERA over 10.2 innings of work, while batting .333 over three games last week; struck out a combined 11 in two games against Butler and one against St. John's
Alvarez went 1-0 against Butler with a 3.11 ERA and nine strikeouts over 9.0 innings of work
Providence will play a three-game series against UConn beginning on Tuesday, April, 27. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in game one followed by a 5:00 p.m. first pitch in game two. The Friars will play the Huskies the following day, April 28, at 1:00 p.m.
