PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College field hockey junior defender
Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, March 30. It marks the second time Collins has earned Defensive Player of the Week recognition during her career.
Collins helped propel the Friars to a come-from-behind victory against Temple on March 27. She assisted on the Friars' first goal of the game in the fourth quarter, and then tallied the game-tying goal with under three-minutes to play in regulation. After two scoreless overtime periods, Collins scored the deciding goal for Providence in the shootout to give the Friars a 3-2 win. Defensively, she anchored a backfield that allowed just one shot in the decisive second half, after giving up six shot in the first half.
On March 28, she anchored a defense that held Temple to five shots and just two corners, but offensively, Providence couldn't find the back on the net in a 1-0 loss. In that match-up, the Friars couldn't capitalize on offense despite an 11-5 edge in shots (5-3 SOG) and 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Providence returns to action on Thursday, April 1 against non-conference foe Northeastern. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
