The Friar women finished eighth while the men finished 19th.

MADISON, Wis. – The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 15 in Madison, Wis. The No. 19 Friar women finished eighth out of 36 teams (267 points). The men finished 19th out of 31 teams (462 points).

The women's side was led by graduate student Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.).  Coffin maintained a top-25 position throughout the duration of the race and finished strong with a 22nd-place finish in a time of 20:33. Fellow Friars Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) and Lily Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) held positions in the top-30 for the duration of the race. Mooney finished with a 25th-place finish (20:37), while Tuck finished right behind her in 27th-place (20:40). Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and Kimberly May (Auckland, New Zealand) rounded out the top five finishing in 78th (21:10) and 116th (21:24), respectively.

"I'm really happy with the women's performance today," Head Coach Ray Treacy said.  "We beat 11 ranked teams and we have room to improve over the next few weeks.  All roads lead to BIG EAST Championships in two weeks and this performance will give the team the confidence that they can battle for the league title."

For the men, the Friars were led by a 10th-place finish (23:36) by graduate student Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.). Sophomore Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and graduate student AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) finished the Nuttycombe Invitational in 67th (24:11) and 83rd (24:20), respectively. Rounding out the Friars top five were graduate student Ryan Gallagher in 24:38 and sophomore Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) in 25:26.

"It was an awesome performance from Marcelo [Rocha]." Treacy said.  "On the team side, we had solid performances from Liam, AJ and Ryan.  Unfortunately our number two from the Battle of Beantown, David McGlynn, had to pull out of race with an injury. This cost us multiple spots in the team standings, but still we finished ahead of regional rivals Syracuse and Iona."

The Friars will return to action when they travel to New Britain, Conn. on Oct. 22 for the CCSU Mini Meet.
