Women's Hoops Drops 77-68 Decision To Creighton

Four Friars reached double-figures led by Mary Baskerville's 19 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College women's basketball team dropped a 77-68 decision to Creighton on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Providence, R.I. The Friars were paced by Mary Baskerville's (Enfield, Conn.) 19 points and eight rebounds. Providence dropped to 1-11 in BIG EAST play, 10-14 overall. Creighton moved to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the BIG EAST.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• The game was tied 5-5 before Friars went on a 11-3 run to gain a 16-8 lead with 4:57 remaining. 
• Creighton responded with a 7-2 run to pull back within three (18-15).
• Providence took a 23-21 lead into the break.
Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) led the Friars with eight points, Baskerville had seven and Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with six. 
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• Creighton went on a 17-2 run in the quarter to take its largest lead of the first half (38-29).
• Providence closed the gap with a 9-2 run to close the quarter. 
• Creighton took a 43-38 lead into the half.
• Baskerville paced the Friars with 11 points on 5-5 shooting and four rebounds.
• Webb scored 10 first-half points on 4-5 shooting and 2-3 from deep.
• Creighton's Jaylyn Agnew led all scorers with 20 points on 8-12 shooting and 3-6 from deep.
• Providence shot 66.7-percent (16-24) from the field, 66.7-percent (4-6) from three and 66.7-percent (2-3) from the line.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Creighton took its first double-digit lead of the game with 6:55 remaining after an Agnew jumper (50-40).
• Providence went on a 7-2 run to finish the frame and cut the deficit to single-digits (65-56).
• Baskerville, Scott and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored five points apiece in the quarter for the Friars.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Friars converted on their first field goal on the quarter on a lay-up by Hevynne Bristow (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 5:07 remaining.
• Providence cut the game back to single digits for the first time since 4:31 remaining in the third after a 7-0 run late in the fourth.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Four players reached double figures in the scoring column for the second-straight game.
• Baskerville led Providence with 19 points on 8-12 shooting and eight rebounds. She also added three steals, two assist and one blocked shot.
• Scott finished with 16 points on 7-12 shooting.
• Geary chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
• Webb was the final Friar with double figures with 10 points on 4-6 shooting.
• Providence shot 52.9-percent (27-51) from the field, 50-percent (6-12) from deep and 61.5-percent (8-13) from the line.
• Creighton got a career-high 38 points by Agnew. 
• As a team, the Bluejays shot 48.2-percent (27-56) from the field, 45.7-percent (16-35) from three-point range and 77.8-percent (7-9) from the line.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action next weekend with a pair of home games against BIG EAST foes Seton Hall and St. John's. On Friday, Feb. 14, Providence hosts the Pirates for its 13th Annual Project Providence event. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m. at Alumni Hall. The Friars close the weekend against the Red Storm on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m. The match-up between Providence and St. John's will serve as the program's Annual Pink Out Friartown event. The event helps support the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
