Sabou Gueye To Play For Senegal In FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament

Senegal opens play on Wednesday, March 11 against the United States.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College graduate student Sabou Gueye (Dakar, Senegal) finished her collegiate career with the Friar women's basketball team on March 7 in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals. After a quick turnaround, she will begin play with the Senegal Women's National Team at the FIBA World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico (March 11-17).
 
Gueye and Senegal are ranked 25th in the World Rankings and will take on the United States in their opening game of the tournament on March 11 at 5:00 p.m. The American side is ranked No. 1 in the world and have already solidified their spot in the Women's World Cup. Joining Senegal and the United State in Group A will be New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Italy and Spain.

Gueye previously competed with Senegal in the 2024 FIBA World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Rwanda.
 
In her lone season with Providence, Gueye played 33 games and averaged 15.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She shot an impressive 49-percent from the field (219-447) and 76-percent from the foul line (71-94). She was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team on March 5. Gueye is just the second Friar to earn First Team accolades in the last 32 years and first since 2010.
 
In two BIG EAST Tournament games, Gueye averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block per game. In the Friars' First Round match-up against DePaul, Gueye scored a career-high 31 points on 15-26 shooting and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
