PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College softball Head Coach Jill Karwoski announced today (Nov. 12) that seven student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College as a member of the softball team.

"Next fall, our Friar family will be growing extensively," Karwoski said. "Our staff is confident that these seven athletes will help us reach our goal in competing for a Big East Championship. We'd like to officially welcome all of them to Friartown!"

The Friars' class of 2021 consists of Kari Shedrick (Holly Springs, N.C.), Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.), Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.), Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.), Bella Sebastian (Ramsey, N.J.), and Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.)

Shedrick, a first baseman and outfielder, is joining the Friars from Holly Springs High School (N.C.). While playing for the Carolina Cardinals Chandler Team in her showcase season, she led her travel team in home runs (6), runs batted in (34), and hits (37), with a slugging percentage of .750 in the 2020 season. Shedrick earned all-conference and all-district honors from 2017-2019.

Karwoski: "A lefty power hitter, Kari comes from an athletic family. With her energy and athleticism, she will be sure to make an impact in our program immediately!"

Douma, a middle infielder, currently attends Midland Park High School (N.J.). In her 2018 season, Douma was her team's leadoff hitter with a .447 batting average and led her team in stolen bases. She was a First Team All-League and Third Team All-County selection for the 2018 season.

Karwoski: "As an athlete, Emma is both versatile and a team player. She comes from a championship culture and will be sure to provide depth in the middle infield."

Kosinski, a first baseman and catcher, posted a .508 batting average in 2019 with her travel team (Newtown Rock Gold Garvey). As a varsity captain in her junior and senior years, her teams registered a 43-6 career record.

Karwoski: "Passionate about Friartown, Lea will certainly add both depth and power offensively as well as take command of the defense behind the plate."

Petrarca, a utility player, currently attends the Academy of the Holy Names (Fla.). She was awarded her team's Most Valuable Player in 2019 and earned a Tampa Bay Times All-Hillsborough Honorable Mention. Petrarca enters her senior season coming off a junior campaign where she batted .400 and posted a .526 on-base percentage. In her showcase season, Petrarca plays for the Clearwater Bullets Fastpitch.

Karwoski: "Rachael not only has a high softball IQ, but she can play multiple positions with her athleticism, knowledge of the game and ability to compete both defensively and offensively."

Loncharich, a utility player, plays for Yucaipa High School (Calif.) while being a member for the Ohana Tigers in her showcase seasons. The four-year varsity starter had a .384 batting average and an on-base percentage of .405 during the 2020 season. She was named Second Team All-League in 2018, First Team All-League in 2019 and is currently in the running for Scholar Athlete of the Year for the Class of 2021.

Karwoski: "We are excited Kaelyn will be joining us next fall! She is a high-achieving athlete and can cover extensive ground in the outfield."

Sebastian, an outfielder from Ramsey High School (N.J.), had a breakout 2019 season where she batted .475 with 36 runs and 31 runs batted in. She helped her team to both State Sectional and County Championship Games and was named to both First Team All-County and All-State teams. Sebastian plays for the New Jersey Batbusters in her showcase season.

Karwoski: "With a sister who also competes in the Big East, we are certain Bella will make her own mark unique at Providence with her impressive range in the outfield and skills offensively."

Walter, a pitcher, began her career at Appoquinimink High School before attending Caravel Academy College Preparatory in Bear, Del. During her time at Appoquinimink High School, Walter set single-season school records for ERA (0.22) , WHIP (0.48) and opponents batting average (.089) while helping her team to two back-to-back conference championship wins. Walter plays for the EC Bullets Coleman.

Karwoski: "Coming off a successful fall season, Jessica is a competitive pitcher with the ability to throw hard and use her spin rate to effectively keep batters off balance."
