Women’s Basketball Drops 60-50 Contest to Marquette

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College women's basketball team dropped a 60-50 contest against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday, Jan. 5 at Alumni Hall. Marquette registers their first BIG EAST win of the season (1-2) and improves to 10-4 on the season. Providence falls to 9-6 on the year, 0-4 in BIG EAST play. Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) chipped in a career-high 24 points on 10-14 shooting to go with eight rebounds.
FIRST QUARTER:
• After Providence started 0-4 from the field, Baskerville finished an Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) feed to get the Friars on the board.
• The Friars endured a three-minute scoring drought, before Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) ended the drought on a lefty lay-up with 38-seconds left on the clock.
• Marquette ended the first frame with a 10-7 lead. The Friars shot 3-11 (.273) from the field while the Golden Eagles converted on 4-11 (.364).
• Six of Marquette's 10 points came off second chances as Marquette had the upper hand in the rebounding battle (11-4) including four offensive rebounds.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) gave Providence its first lead of the game with 8:56 left in the quarter, with a deep three-pointer as the shot clock expiring.
• The offense started to get going for the Friars, as Providence converted on three of its first four possessions.
• At the media timeout, the game was all tied, 18-18.
• Alyssa Geary's (Elmhurst, Ill.) post entry to Baskerville for an easy lay-in regained the lead for the Friars with 4:28 on the clock.
• The Friars entered the break with a 27-26 lead behind a perfect 6-6 shooting from the field by Baskerville. Baskerville had a game-high 12 points to go with three rebounds.
• Providence shot 41.7-percent (10-24) from field to Marquette's 42.9-percent (9-21).
• Marquette held a 17-11 advantage on the glass.
• Providence forced 10 turnovers and converted them into 11 points.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Marquette came out of the half on an 8-3 run to claim a 34-29 lead.
• Providence struggled to score at the end of the quarter, missing their last six shots during a three-minute span.
• The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars 17-12 in the quarter and held a 44-38 lead at the end of the three.
• Providence shot 3-13 (.231) from the field and hit 5-6 (.833) from the line.
• Marquette got eight points from the charity stripe and shot 4-11 (.364) from the field on the quarter.
• Turnovers were an issue for both teams as Providence had five and Marquette committed seven.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• A fast-break layup by Marquette's Lauren Van Kleunen gave the Golden Eagles their first double digit lead (49-39) with 7:52 remaining.
• Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) responded on the next possession with her first three of the game to bring the deficit back to single digits.
• Marquette extended its lead to 12 with a lay-up with 1:47 remaining.
• Marquette outscored Providence, 16-12, and had a 13-7 advantage on the boards in the final frame.
• Providence shot 5-16 (.313) from the field and 1-5 (.200) from deep in the fourth quarter.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Baskerville led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 10-14 shooting to go with eight rebounds.
• It marked Baskerville's second-straight 20-point performance and fourth of her career.
• Webb was the only other Friar in double figures with ten points.
• Geary tied her career-high in assists (four).
• Marquette controlled the rebounding battle, 43-24, including 12 offensive rebounds.
• Providence forced 21 Marquette turnovers and turned them into 20 points.
