Creighton Rallies In Fourth Quarter To Defeat Providence College, 72-63

OMAHA, NEB. – The Providence College women's team fell to Creighton, 72-63, in BIG EAST action on Jan. 11 in Omaha, Neb. The Bluejays, who are receiving votes in the ESPN Coaches' Poll, used a 25-11 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to claim the win. Providence dropped to 9-8 (0-5 BIG EAST), while Creighton improved to 12-4 (4-1 BIG EAST).
FIRST QUARTER:
• Creighton used an 8-0 run to claim a 10-3 advantage early in the quarter.
• The Friars responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take an 11-10 edge heading into the media timeout at 3:32.
• Out of the break, Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted 1-2 free throws to extend the run to 9-0 (12-10).
• Providence hit 5-9 attempts from three-point territory in the opening quarter en route to a 23-19 lead at the break.
• The Friars' 23 points marked the most in a single quarter since dropping 24 in the opening 10 minutes against Utah on Dec. 16.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Creighton hit its first two shots to open the second frame to regain the lead (24-23), but Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) knocked down her third three of the game at the 7:32 mark to give PC a 26-24 advantage.
• A two-minute and 23-second scoring drought sent the Friars to the media timeout trailing 28-27 with 4:40 on the clock.
• Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) ended the drought with a pair of free throws at 4:01 to get Providence within one (30-29).
• Cooper's free throws started a 13-0 run over the final 4:01 of the half to give the Friars a 40-30 lead going into the locker room.
• Webb led nine Friars in the scoring column with nine points and she joined Scott as one of two players to dish four assists in the opening 20 minutes.
• Providence recorded 11 assists on 14 made field goals, while shooting 47-percent from the field (14-30). The Friars hit 6-11 attempts from three-point territory (.545).
• The Friars dominated the glass in the first half, 21-16.
THIRD QUARTER:
• Providence matched its largest lead of the game (11 points) on two occasions in the frame, including a 50-39 advantage with 3:00 on the clock.
• Creighton's Temi Carda scored five-straight points to end the quarter and get the Bluejays within five (52-47) heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
•The Bluejays held a 17-12 scoring advantage in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Bluejays inched within three (56-53) as Jalyn Agnew got a friendly bounce off the rim on a jumper from the left wing at 7:10.
• Scott provided some breathing room with a pair of free throws at 6:16 to put Providence back up by five (58-53).
• Four-straight points by Bachelor and Carda helped Creighton cut the deficit to just one (58-57), forcing a Providence timeout at the 4:22 mark.
• At that point, the Friars had gone without a field goal for 4:44.
• Creighton took the lead on back-to-back buckets by Agnew, forcing another Providence timeout with 2:45 to play, as the 'Jays gained a three-point edge (61-58).
• It marked Creighton's first lead since the 4:01 mark of the second quarter (30-29).
• Providence turned the ball over out of the break and Agnew struck again on a three-point bucket (64-58).
• Webb answered on the other end with her fourth triple of the game with 1:55 to play, keeping Creighton within reach at 64-61.
• The 'Jays used a 15-3 scoring advantage to match its largest lead of the game 68-61 with under a minute to play (68-61).
• Agnew scored nine of her team-high 18 points in the decisive fourth quarter.
• Creighton out-scored Providence 25-11 in the fourth quarter.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence shot 41.8-percent (23-55) from the field, 46.7-percent (7-15) from deep and 66.7-percent (10-15) from the line.
• Providence won the rebound battle, 37-29, led by Hevynne Bristow (six). The Friars had 13 offensive rebounds, turning them into nine second chance points.
• Providence forced seven turnovers, converting them into 20 points.
• The Friars received 32 bench points compared to the Bluejays' 14. Scott provided a spark off the bench with a team-highs 14 points and five assists with four rebounds.
• Webb shot 5-7 from the field including 4-5 from three-point range to tie Scott with a team-high 14 points.
• Creighton extends the all-time series lead against the Friars, 13-2.
• Providence drops to 1-6 all-time at the D.J. Sokol Arena.
