NEW ORLEANS, La.- The United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today (Jan. 30) that the Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams earned the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team awards. Additionally,
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.),
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Ontario) and
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) were named USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic Athletes.
For teams to qualify for All-Academic distinction, they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period. The men's cross-country team held a team GPA of 3.19. The women's cross-country team had a cumulative GPA of 3.38, marking the highest grade-point average of any varsity athletic program at Providence College for the 2019 fall semester.
In order for individuals to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships.
Wheeler, a senior Mathematics major, placed 15th (19:55.6) at the NCAA Regional Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. on Nov. 15. Tuck, a freshman Biology major, finished 23rd (20:12.7) at the NCAA Regional Championships. Wheeler and Tuck both earned All-Region Honors.
Rocha, a junior Environmental Biology major, finished 25
th (29:29.4) at the NCAA Regional Championships. His finish earned Rocha All-Region Honors.
