PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team was selected sixth in the 2020 BIG EAST Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll on Monday, Jan. 13. Providence finished third in the BIG EAST standings in 2019 after posting an 11-9 conference record and 30-22 overall record.
Jill Karwoski joined the Friars in 2019 for her inaugural season as the Friars head coach. She led the team to 30 wins, which marked the most wins in a season since Providence won 33 games in 2005. Karwoski brought the Friars to the BIG EAST Semifinal game for the first time since 2013 and coached two players to BIG EAST honors at the conclusion of the season.
Alex Lagesse has joined the staff as an assistant coach alongside
Bree Nasti. Lagesse was an assistant coach for the University of North Florida during the 2019 season. The Ospreys finished with a 30-24 overall record before falling in the ASUN Championship game. Prior to the University of North Florida, Lagesse served as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Michigan through a run of three NCAA Regional appearances (2016, 2017, 2018). Lagesse graduated from Valparaiso University in 2012 after pitching four seasons for the softball program. She posted a career 2.37 ERA and holds the program record for wins.
The Friars will have to deal with the loss of
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.), a 2019 BIG EAST Second Team member, who led the team in hitting last season with a .411 batting average. She ended her career as the all-time hits leader, with 238 in 189 games played. Senior
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) will look to fill the gap after posting a .314 average last season with four home runs and 16 RBI's.
