PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The BIG EAST Conference released its 2019 Preseason Coaches' Poll and honorees for field hockey on Friday, Aug. 23. The Providence College Friars were picked to finish third in the league standings, while graduate student
Corinne Kenney (Warrington, Pa.) and senior
Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) were featured on the 14-player Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Providence College finished the 2018 campaign with an 11-8 overall record, including a 4-3 mark in the BIG EAST, which was good for a third-place finish. Heading into the current season, the Friars return 14 letter winners from last year's team, including nine members of the starting line-up and five players who earned All-BIG EAST First or Second-Team recognition. Six newcomers also will join the roster, balancing the team's veteran presence, which consists of two graduate students and seven seniors.
Connecticut was picked to win the league title, claiming seven first-place votes and a total of 49 points. Liberty picked up the remaining first-place vote and checked in with 42 points. Providence sits in third place with 34 points, while Old Dominion rounds out the top four spots (33 points). Villanova was selected to finish fifth (24 points), followed by Temple (16 points), Quinnipiac (15 points) and Georgetown (11 points).
Kenney, who has returned as a graduate student to finish her eligibility, has been a staple in the Friars' defensive unit throughout her career. She earned All-BIG EAST and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First Team recognition last season and was an All-BIG EAST Second-Team honoree in 2017. Kenney has been a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection in back-to-back years (2018, 2019). During her career, she has started all 56 games she has appeared in and has recorded 10 career points on two goals and six assists. Last season, Kenney registered a single-season career high of five assists. She also excels in the classroom as a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team and NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honoree.
O'Reilly, a midfielder, earns Preseason All-BIG EAST accolades for the first time in her career. As a junior in 2018, she was named to the All-BIG EAST and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Teams, in addition to representing Providence on the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship All-Tournament Team. O'Reilly has started 52 of the 56 games she has appeared in during her career and has totaled 22 points on seven goals and eight assists. Last year, she registered a single-season career best of 10 points on four goals and two assists. In the classroom, O'Reilly is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic honoree.
Providence College opens the 2019 regular-season schedule on Friday, Aug. 30 against Boston College. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. The Friars open BIG EAST Conference action at home against Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:00 p.m.
