PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) and
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) earned All-BIG EAST recognition from the conference office on Wednesday, May 8. Alvarez was named BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year alongside Peyton Cody of St. John's, as well as earning All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Lee was recognized as an All-BIG EAST Second Team member.
Alvarez, the Friars' ace in the circle, is the first Friar in program history to be named as the BIG EAST Co-Freshman or Freshman of the Year as well as earning a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team. She was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week three times this season (Mar. 11, Apr. 1, Apr. 29). Currently, she ranks third in strikeouts for Providence's single-season pitching records with 134, third in games won (18) and fifth in shutouts with six. Alvarez's 18 victories, 4.06 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 2.16 ERA prove to be the best in the conference. She has struck out 134 batters which places third in the BIG EAST conference. In 26 starts during the 2019 campaign, she has posted an 18-7 overall record with a 2.16 ERA. She has pitched a team-high 159 innings for the Friars, with 14 complete games while holding opposing hitters to a .220 batting average.
Lee is the fourth player in program history to earn All-BIG EAST honors in at least three seasons in a Friar uniform. She was named to the 2016 All-BIG EAST First Team, 2017 All-BIG EAST Second Team and now the 2019 All-BIG EAST Second Team. Lee has made her mark in program history as she sits in first place for career batting average (.379), second in runs scored (130), fifth in stolen bases (28) and first in hits (238). She broke the all-time hits record on April 6, 2019 in her first at-bat against Villanova in an eventual 2-1 victory. This season, she hit her first career home run against Bethune-Cookman on February 15, as well as picking up a 17-game hitting streak spanning from March 24-April 20. Lee posts the second highest batting average (.419) in the conference and is ranked 33
rd nationally. Lee enters the BIG EAST Softball Championship with a team-high .419 batting average and .468 on-base percentage. She has totaled 65 hits, 20 RBI and 83 total bases during her senior campaign. On the defensive side, she has failed to make an error this season while making 52 put-outs in right field and holds a .969 career fielding percentage.
Providence travels to Rosemont, Ill. to compete in its first BIG EAST Softball Championship appearance since the 2013 season, the final season before the conference made the tournament a four-team field. The Friars will face No. 2 seed DePaul in the semifinal round on Friday, May 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (CT) / 4:00 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised live on FS2.
