Softball Falls in BIG EAST Semifinal to DePaul, 4-0

5/10/2019 7:04:00 PM | Softball

The Friars end their 2019 campaign with a 30-22 record, their most wins since the 2005 season.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Providence College softball team fell in the BIG EAST Championship semifinal game against the DePaul Blue Demons, 4-0, in Rosemont, Ill. on Friday, May 10. The Friars reached the BIG EAST Semifinal for the first time since the 2013 season, a year prior to the conference making the tournament a four-team field. Providence ends its 2019 campaign with a 30-22 overall record, their most wins since the 2005 season when the team totaled 33 wins.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence gave up a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and failed to inch back as DePaul earned the 4-0 shutout victory.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) started in the circle and had a shaky first inning but settled down for the remainder of the game, only allowing one run in the final six innings. Kate Poulcha gave the Blue Demons a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a three-run home run to left field that just cleared the fence.
- The score remained 3-0 into the bottom of the fourth inning before an error allowed DePaul's fourth run to cross the plate. Brianna Viles struck out swinging but on a dropped third strike, the ball got away from Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) at first base allowing the runner at second to round third and score.
- The Friars' biggest threat of the afternoon came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) advanced Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.), who pinch ran for McGarry, to third base with no outs in the inning on an infield single. It looked as if the Friars got on the board when Abbatiello popped a ball up behind second base, Flego ran home and scored but DePaul threw the ball to third to protest Flego leaving early. The umpire called Flego out to complete the double play.
- Alvarez pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. She struck out seven batters in the game. Alvarez ends the regular season with an 18-8 record, 2.21 ERA and 141 strikeouts.
- Martin went 2-2 at the plate with a double and single, Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) and McGary also contributed a hit in the game.

ON DECK:
The loss ends an historic season for the Friars with their first BIG EAST Championship appearance in six years.
