Men's Lacrosse Hosts Georgetown In BIG EAST Play

SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. GEORGETOWN... The Friars are 2-9 all-time against the Hoyas. Last season Georgetown captured an 8-4 victory. Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the Friars offensively with a goal and an assist. Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made nine saves.

OT WIN TO OPEN BIG EAST PLAY... The Friars moved to 1-0 in league play with an 8-7 overtime win at St. John's last weekend (March 30). Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) led the team offensively, scoring two goals and adding an assist. His assist came on Matt Grillo's (Setauket, N.Y.) game winner. Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) and Luke O'Grady (Wayne, Pa.) scored man-up goals to help the Friars go 2-for-3 with the man advantage. Boyce made 17 saves in net for the Friars.

BIG EAST WEEKLY AWARDS... Boyce was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season on April 1. He posted 17 saves for his third 15+ save performance this season. Hinrichs joined Boyce in the weekly awards, as he was selected to the Honor Roll for the first time in his career.

HATZ HITS 100... After being held scoreless on opening day against BU, Nick Hatzipetrakos posted seven-straight games with three or more goals (Feb. 9-Mar. 19). He reached 100 career points with two goals and an assist in the Friars' game against Drexel (Mar. 24). The senior has a total of 28 goals, which is already the highest season total of his career. The attackman has had four games with four goals this season. Hatzipetrakos has 77 goals and 24 assists in his career for 101 total points. On March 11, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his performance at Harvard.

Hatzipetrakos ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals per game (2.80). He is first in the BIG EAST in shot percentage (.459).

LOCK DOWN DEFENSE... Providence ranks eighth nationally in scoring defense, allowing 9.10 goals per game. The Friars are second in the BIG EAST, behind Denver (8.56).

ONE GOAL GAMES... Five of Providence's 10 games this season have been decided by just one goal. The Friars are 2-3 in those contests.

BOYCE CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE CAREER... Boyce, a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-consecutive season on Feb. 28. More recently, he was named one of 10 finalists for the prestigous Senior CLASS Award (March 29). The goalkeeper has already had a storied career in Friartown, including being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a USILA/Nike Third-Team All-American in 2017. For his career, Boyce holds a 9.45 goals against average, a .549 save percentage and has accumulated 652 total saves. 

So far this season Boyce has a 9.25 goals against average (seventh in the nation) and a .585 save percentage (seventh in the nation). He's the BIG EAST leader in save percentage and saves per game, averaging 12.70, and has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times (Feb. 25, Mar. 19, Apr. 1). 

JENNINGS STRONG ON D... Sophomore Emmett Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.) has been strong defensively for the Friars, starting all 10 games. He has 16 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls this season. He ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in caused turnovers per game, with 1.60. 

CONTRIBUTIONS AT THE 'X'... RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.), Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Alex George (Simsbury, Conn.) have all taken face-offs for the Friars this season. Romeo leads the team in attempts, going 55-of-113 and win percentage (.487). Romeo also leads the team in ground balls (36). 

GRILLO GETS GOING... Freshman Matt Grillo has had a strong start to his rookie campaign, starting all 10 contests. He is third on the team in points (25), tied for second in goals (17) and fourth in assists (eight). Three of his goals have been game winners, including the deciding goal against St. John's to open BIG EAST play. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 25 after a seven-point performance at St. Joseph's. 

WHERE KEARNS RANKS... Last year, senior Brendan Kearns became the 22nd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. He currently has 84 goals and 52 assists for 136 total points. He is tied for 10th all-time in points, 11th in goals and 12th in assists. 

Kearns is second on the team in points (28) and goals (17). He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (Feb. 11 and March 4). 

FRIARS AT HOME... Four of the Friars' last five regular season games for the will be played at home. Providence is looking for its first home win of the season, as the team is 0-3 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars are 5-2 on the road. 

FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with a total of 10 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected four first-place votes and 25 points overall. Marquette (18 points) was picked to finish second and Georgetown (17 points), who received one first place vote, was picked third. 

TWO FRIARS EARN PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST SPOTS... It was announced by the league on Wednesday, Jan. 23 that Providence College men's lacrosse players Tate Boyce and Alex George were named to the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Boyce, who has now been on the squad for three-consecutive seasons, was a unanimous selection. 

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN... The Hoyas come to Friartown with a 7-3 overall record, including an 0-2 start to BIG EAST play. Georgetown was on a five-game winning streak, before falling to Marquette (9-8) and Denver (16-9). The Hoyas rank first in the league in scoring offense (12.90) and third in scoring defense (9.90). Georgetown's highest national ranking was No. 14 and came before the start of league action. The Hoyas are currently receiving votes in the USILA Coaches' Poll. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH... Senior Daniel Bucaro leads Georgetown in goals (34) and points (52). He's fourth in the nation in goals per game (3.40) and eighth nationally in points per game (5.20). Junior Jake Carraway is close behind with 48 points on 29 goals and 19 assists. The duo ranks first and second in the BIG EAST in points per game. 

In net, sophomore Owen McElroy has started all 10 games. He ranks second in the BIG EAST in save percentage (.540), third in saves per game (10.90) and third in goals against average (10.56).
