SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. BROWN... The Friars are 1-22 all-time against the Bears. Last season, Providence earned the program's first win over Brown in dramatic fashion, topping the Bears 12-11 in overtime. Seven different Friars scored and Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made nine saves to help Providence capture the Ocean State Cup.
OCEAN STATE CUP IMPLICATIONS... The game against the Bears is the Friars' second Ocean State Cup game of the season. Earlier this year, Providence fell to Bryant, 11-8 (Feb. 16). Brown and Bryant are slated to play each other on April 23. If all three teams were to go 1-1, point differential would decide the title.
FRIARS WIN BIG AGAINST MARQUETTE... Providence took down Marquette to move back to .500 and improve to 2-1 in the league. The Friars jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, winning by an eventual score of 15-8. Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) led the offense with five goals. Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) chipped in three goals and two assists for five points. Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 13-for-26 at the 'X' and Boyce made eight saves.
BIG EAST WEEKLY AWARDS... Grillo was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career (April 15) after his five-goal performance against Marquette. Junior Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.) earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll, as he helped the defensive unit hold Marquette to just eight goals. He picked up four ground balls and caused one turnover in the game, as well.
FRIARS FALL TO GEORGETOWN... The Hoyas claimed a 17-15 victory over Providence on April 6. Providence led 9-5 at halftime before Georgetown stormed back. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) posted a season-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Boyce made 15 saves in net, marking his fourth game of the season with 15+ stops. Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.), Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) and Brendan Kearns were the other Friars with three or more points.
OT WIN TO OPEN BIG EAST PLAY... The Friars moved to 1-0 in league play with an 8-7 overtime win at St. John's (March 30). Tim Hinrichs led the team offensively, scoring two goals and adding an assist. His assist came on Matt Grillo's game winner. Kevin McCordic and Luke O'Grady (Wayne, Pa.) scored man-up goals to help the Friars go 2-for-3 with the man advantage. Boyce made 17 saves in net for the Friars.
GRILLO GETS GOING... Freshman Matt Grillo has had an impressive rookie campaign, starting all 12 contests. He is third on the team in points (31) and tied for second in goals (23). Four of his goals have been game winners, including the deciding goal against St. John's to open BIG EAST play. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 25 after a seven-point performance at St. Joseph's.
HATZIPETRAKOS LEADS THE OFFENSE... After being held scoreless on opening day against BU, Nick Hatzipetrakos posted seven-straight games with three or more goals (Feb. 9-Mar. 19). He reached 100 career points with two goals and an assist in the Friars' game against Drexel (Mar. 24). The senior has a total of 34 goals and has had eight games with a hat trick or better this season. He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (March 11, April 8).
Hatzipetrakos ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals per game (2.83) and fifth in points per game (3.33). He is first in the BIG EAST in shot percentage (.472).
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE... Providence ranks 12th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 9.63 goals per game. The Friars are second in the BIG EAST, behind Denver (9.18).
ONE GOAL GAMES... Five of Providence's 12 games this season have been decided by just one goal. The Friars are 2-3 in those contests.
BOYCE CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE CAREER... Boyce, a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-consecutive season on Feb. 28. More recently, he was named one of 10 finalists for the prestigous Senior CLASS Award (March 29). The goalkeeper has already had a storied career in Friartown, including being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a USILA/Nike Third-Team All-American in 2017. For his career, Boyce holds a 9.51 goals against average, a .546 save percentage and has accumulated 675 total saves.
So far this season, Boyce has a 9.80 goals against average and a .566 save percentage, which is ninth in the nation. He's the BIG EAST leader in save percentage and saves per game, averaging 12.50. He has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times (Feb. 25, Mar. 19, Apr. 1).
JENNINGS STRONG ON D... Sophomore Emmett Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.) has been strong defensively for the Friars, starting all 12 games. He has 17 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls this season. He ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in caused turnovers per game, with 1.42.
CONTRIBUTIONS AT THE 'X'... RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) and Colin Keating have shared the face-off duties for the Friars this season. Keating is 73-for-145, while Romeo is 58-for-119. Keating is fourth in the BIG EAST (.503) and Romeo is sixth (.483) in face-off win percentage. Keating has taken a majority of the draws over the last six games.
WHERE KEARNS RANKS... Last year, senior Brendan Kearns became the 22nd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. He currently has 90 goals and 54 assists for 144 total points. He is tied for seventh all-time in goals and is 12th in assists.
Kearns is second on the team in points (36) and goals (23). He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (Feb. 11 and March 4).
FRIARS AT HOME... Two of the Friars' last three regular season games will be played at home. Providence got its first home win of the season against Marquette (April 13) to move to 1-4 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars are 5-2 on the road.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with a total of 10 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected four first-place votes and 25 points overall. Marquette (18 points) was picked to finish second and Georgetown (17 points), who received one first place vote, was picked third.
SCOUTING BROWN... The Bears are 4-7 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play. Brown has lost five of its last six games and most recently fell to Yale (17-12). As a team, Brown averages 12.3 goals per game, while giving up 12.6. The Bears rank third in the Ivy League in face-off winning percentage (.489) and ground balls per game (33.09).
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Junior Luke McCaleb leads the team in points (40) and goals (27). He's fifth in the Ivy League in goals per game (2.45) and 10th in points per game (3.64). Darian Cook and George Grell each have a team-leading 14 assists. Cook has 37 total points, while Grell has 30. Cook also has five man-up tallies this season.
Jason Simaan (78-for-155) and Matt McShea (71-for-150) have shared face-off duties. Simaan has a .503 winning percentage, which ranks third in the Ivy League. Junior Phil Goss has started all 11 games in net. He holds a 12.38 goals against average and a .493 save percentage.
