QUEENS, N.Y. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team battled to an 8-7 overtime victory at St. John's to open BIG EAST Play on Saturday, March 30. The Friars improved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
1st Quarter: St. John's got on the board first, as Jonathan Huber scored for the Red Storm. The Friars responded, scoring on their first man-up opportunity of the game.
Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season, which was assisted by
Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.), with 6:54 remaining in the quarter.
Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made eight saves in the period to keep the score level at 1-1.
2nd Quarter:
Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) notched back-to-back goals to increase Providence's lead to 3-1 with 7:57 remaining in the quarter. St. John's answered with three-straight goals, including two man-up tallies, to regain the lead and head to halftime up 4-3.
3rd Quarter: The Red Storm outscored the Friars, 2-1, in the third quarter. Mike Masden and Jonathan Huber each scored for SJU. In between those tallies, Providence freshman
Mike O'Grady (Milton, Mass.) scored his second-career goal on a man-up opportunity. Kearns earned his second assist of the game on the play.
4th Quarter: The Friars scored three-straight goals in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.),
Luke O'Grady (Wayne, Pa.) and
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) were Providence's goal scorers. Hatzipetrakos' goal, which gave Providence its first lead since the second quarter, came with 5:12 on the clock. Colin Duffy scored his second goal of the game for SJU with 2:20 to play to tie the game at 7-7. Providence forced a shot-clock violation and turnover to have an offensive possession with under a minute to play. The Friars called timeout and drew up a play, but were unable to get a clean shot on frame.
OT: Providence won the opening face-off and had the first possession. The Red Storm forced a turnover to regain possession, but ended up turning it over at the other end. Providence cleared successfully and found the back of the net with 1:12 on the clock in overtime.

Game Notes:
- Hinrichs led the Friars with three points on two goals and an assist. The game was Hinrichs' fourth multi-point performance of the season.
- Grillo has scored in nine of the Friars' 10 games in his rookie campaign. He's had three-straight two-goal games.
- Boyce finished with 17 saves for the Friars. It is his seventh game this season with at least 10 saves. He's had 15+ in three games this year.
- Providence is now 5-5 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST play.
- The Friars now return home for a three-game homestand, beginning on Saturday, April 6 against Georgetown.
