SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. SJU... The Friars are 3-15 all-time against the Red Storm. Last season, the Friars topped St. John's, 14-8. Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.), Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) each posted hat tricks in the win and Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made 10 saves.
LAST TIME OUT... Providence fell to Drexel (15-9) on March 24. The game was tied 4-4 at the end of the first, but a 6-0 second quarter for the Dragons separated the teams. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) posted three points on two goals and an assist. Kearns and Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) each added two goals, as well. Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 15-for-25 (.600) at the 'X' and Boyce made 14 saves.
EXPLOSIVE EFFORT AT UMASS LOWELL... The Friars earned their largest margin of victory since 2014 with a 14-4 win over the River Hawks on Tuesday (March 19). Hatzipetrakos and Kearns led the team offensively with four points apiece. Grillo, Nawrocki and Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) each had three points. The Friars went 1-for-1 on extra-man opportunities in the game.
HOT START FUELS WIN AT HOFSTRA... The Friars jumped out to a 5-0 lead at Hofstra and eventually came away with an 11-10 victory in New York. Hatzipetrakos and Axelson each scored four goals in the win. Tate Boyce made 16 saves in helping the Friars improve to 3-4 on the year. Colin Keating took a season-high 17 face-offs in the game, posting a .588 win percentage at the 'X.'
HATZ HITS 100... After being held scoreless on opening day against BU, Nick Hatzipetrakos posted seven-straight games with three or more goals (Feb. 9-Mar. 19). He reached 100 career points with two goals and an assist in the Friars' last game against Drexel (Mar. 24). The senior has a total of 27 goals, which is already the highest season total of his career. The attackman has had four games with four goals this season. Hatzipetrakos has 76 goals and 24 assists in his career for 100 total points. On March 11, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his performance at Harvard.
Hatzipetrakos ranks 13th nationally and second in the BIG EAST in goals per game (3.00). He is first in the BIG EAST in shot percentage (.474).
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE... Providence ranks 10th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 9.33 goals per game.
BOYCE CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE CAREER... Boyce, a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was recently named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-consecutive season (Feb. 28). He was then named one of 30 candidates for the prestigous Senior CLASS Award (March 4). The goalkeeper has already had a storied career in Friartown, including being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a USILA/Nike Third-Team All-American in 2017. For his career, Boyce holds a 9.45 goals against average, a .546 save percentage and has accumulated 635 total saves.
So far this season Boyce has a 9.55 goals against average (13th in the nation) and a .570 save percentage (10th in the nation). He's the BIG EAST leader in save percentage and saves per game, averaging 12.22, and has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice (Feb. 25, Mar. 19).
AXELSON'S OUTBURST... Dan Axelson has scored seven goals in the Friars' games against Hofstra (March 16) and UMass Lowell (March 19), pushing his career total to eight goals. The junior midfielder was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and to the USILA DI Team of the Week after his four-goal performance at Hofstra.
CONTRIBUTIONS AT THE 'X'... RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.), Colin Keating and Alex George (Simsbury, Conn.) have all taken face-offs for the Friars this season. Romeo leads the team in attempts, going 52-of-106, while Keating owns the best win percentage (.494). Romeo also leads the team in ground balls (33).
HINRICHS AND NAWROCKI DISH... Juniors Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) and Ryan Nawrocki lead the Friars in assists. Hinrichs, who ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in assists per game, has 12. Nawrocki, who is tenth in assists per game, has 11 so far this season.
GRILLO GETS GOING... Freshman Matt Grillo has had a strong start to his rookie campaign, starting all nine contests. He is third on the team in points (23) and goals (15) and fourth in assists (eight). He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 25 after a seven-point performance at St. Joseph's.
WHERE KEARNS RANKS... Last year, senior Brendan Kearns became the 22nd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. He currently has 84 goals and 50 assists for 134 total points. He is 11th all-time in points and goals and tied for 13th in all-time assists.
Kearns is second on the team in points (26) and goals (17). He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice already this season (Feb. 11 and March 4).
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with a total of 10 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected four first-place votes and 25 points overall. Marquette (18 points) was picked to finish second and Georgetown (17 points), who received one first place vote, was picked third.
TWO FRIARS EARN PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST SPOTS... It was announced by the league on Wednesday, Jan. 23 that Providence College men's lacrosse players Tate Boyce and Alex George were named to the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Boyce, who has now been on the squad for three-consecutive seasons, was a unanimous selection.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S.. The Red Storm enter the game with a 4-4 overall record. The team is coming off back-to-back wins against Dartmouth (15-8) and UMass Lowell (15-13). SJU averages 12.63 goals per game, which is second in the BIG EAST, but gives up 12.75 goals per game, which is last in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm rank fourth nationally in man-up offense, converting at .500.
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Mike Madsen leads the team in points (33) and assists (15). He ranks fourth in the league in assists per game (1.88). Declan Swartwood is the team-leader in goals, with 20. Six of his goals have come in man-up situations, which is second-best in the nation.
Freshman Brody Agres has played all eight games in net. He holds a 12.92 goals against average and a .464 save percentage. He ranks second in the BIG EAST in saves per game (10.63).
