PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to the Drexel University Dragons, 15-9, on Sunday, March 24 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
1st Quarter: The teams traded goals through the first quarter, with Drexel jumping out in front.
Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored from
Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the quarter,
Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.) ripped a shot to tie the game once again (2-2). Kearns scored his second of the quarter with 3:23 remaining, giving the Friars their first lead of the game. This time, Drexel responded to level the score at 3-3.
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) scored his 26
th goal of the season with 51 seconds left on the clock, but the Dragons scored with 14 seconds remaining to make it 4-4.
2nd Quarter: The Dragons opened the second quarter with three goals in the first five minutes to take a 7-4 lead. Nick Fox, Marshal King and Reid Bowering each scored their second of the game for Drexel. The Dragons scored three more unanswered goals in the quarter to head to the locker room with a 10-4 advantage.
3rd Quarter: Drexel scored with 10:30 remaining in the quarter to extend the goal streak to eight straight.
Owen Martinson (Milton, Mass.) scored his second-career goal less than a minute later to snap the Dragons' streak and make it 11-5. Freshman
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) added a tally with 3:43 remaining to make it 11-6. King responded with his fourth goal of the game for Drexel with 1:11 on the clock to push the lead back to six goals (12-6).
4th Quarter: The Dragons scored twice before
Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) tallied his first goal of the game with 6:40 remaining. King then scored his fifth of the game for the Dragons, but the Friars responded with goals from Hatzipetrakos and Grillo to close out the game's scoring.
Game Notes:
- Hatzipetrakos reached 100 career points as a Friar with a three-point game. He recorded two goals and an assist.
- Kearns scored twice in the game for the Friars. He now has five multi-goal games this season.
- Freshman Matt Grillo has scored in eight out of nine games so far in his rookie campaign. He notched two goals in today's contest.
- Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) went 15-for-25 at the face-off 'X' for a .600 win percentage. He recorded season-highs in ground balls (seven), face-off attempts (25) and face-off wins (15).
- Boyce finished with 14 saves in net. The senior has had a double-digit save total in six games this season.
- All 24 goals in the contest were even strength goals.
- Providence falls to 4-5 on the season and will kick off BIG EAST play at St. John's next Saturday (March 30) at 1:00 p.m.
