PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team got eight points from
Brendan Kearns, but Sacred Heart rallied in the second half for a 17-16 win on Saturday afternoon on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars drop to the 2-3 overall in the 2019 season.
1st Quarter:
Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y) put the Friars up 2-0 early on with a pair of goals, his eighth and ninth tallies of the season. The Pioneers responded with goals by Jake Giaquinto and Joe Saggese to knot the game at 2-2.
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y) gave Providence a 3-2 lead after the first quarter with his 11
th tally of the season.
2nd Quarter: The Friars struck for seven goals in the second quarter to take a 10-5 lead after 30 minutes of play. Kearns netted his third and fourth goals of the game, while Hatzipetrakos registered a hat trick for the fourth-consecutive game.
RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.), Joe McHale (Bernardsville, N.J.) and
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) accounted for the other Friar goals. Saggese, Reilly O'Connor, and Alex Weiss scored for the Pioneers.
3rd Quarter: The Pioneers scored five-consecutive goals to tie things up at 10-10 early in the third quarter, including Saggese's third and fourth strikes of the game. Grillo completed his hat trick with a pair of goals just 49 seconds apart to put Providence up 12-10 before Reed Avveduti brought Sacred Heart within one at the end of three quarters.
4th Quarter: The Friars rushed out to a 14-11 lead early in the fourth quarter on goals from
Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Hatzipetrakos. The Pioneers responded with three-straight goals to tie things up at 14.
Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) put Providence back on top, but Sacred Heart came back with three unanswered to make it 17-15. Kearns brought the Friars back within one with 2:12 remaining, but they couldn't find the equalizer as Hinrichs' shot in the final seconds went wide.
Game Notes:
- Kearns led all players with eight points, including five goals.
- Hatzipetrakos recorded a hat trick for the fourth-consecutive game.
- Grillo registered a hat trick for the second game in a row.
- Hinrichs registered a career-high six points and has 10 points overall in his last two games.
