Comback Falls Short For Lacrosse At Harvard, 9-8

Nick Hatzipetrakos tallied four goals in the effort, including two in the fourth quarter rally.

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to Harvard, 9-8, on Saturday, March 9 in Cambridge, Mass.  The Friars trailed by six goals (9-3) before out-scoring the Crimson, 5-0, in the final quarter.  

1st Quarter: Harvard took a 1-0 lead 2:53 into the game on its second offensive possession with a goal from Isaiah Dawson. Providence answered with back-to-back goals from Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) and Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) in span of 1:10 to give the Friars a 2-1 lead.  The Crimson responded with two goals to regain the lead (3-2), but Hatzipetrakos notched his second tally of the day at the 5:26 mark to tie the game, 3-3.  Harvard closed the quarter with two unanswered goals from Andrew Nigel, giving his squad a 5-3 edge after 15 minutes of action.

2nd Quarter: The Crimson pushed their lead to 6-3 as they opened the second quarter with the first man-up goal of the afternoon at 9:41.  It marked the first of just two goals in the second frame, overall, as Harvard took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

3rd Quarter: Harvard kept the scoring streak alive into the third quarter with its fifth-straight goal to take an 8-3 lead just 57-seconds into the stanza.  It tacked on another goal at 8:20 to make it a 9-3 game.  The Friars scoreless stretch moved to 35+ minutes, having last found the back of the cage with 5:26 to play in the first.  Through three quarters, Harvard's goalkeeper Kyle Mullin recorded 16 saves.

4th Quarter: Hatzipetrakos got the Friars back on the board just 50-seconds into the fourth off a feed from Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.).  Mike O'Grady (Milton, Mass.) kept the momentum going with his first collegiate goal at 8:35 (9-5).  Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) followed with his first tally of the season just under two minutes later (9-6).  The offensive flurry continued as Hatzipetrakos buried his fourth of the day and second of the quarter at the 6:28 mark.  The goals by McCordic and Hatzipetrakos came in a span of just 25-seconds.  Freshman phenom Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) accounted for Providence's fifth goal of the fourth quarter with 5:16 to play, marking his 11thof the season.
 
With 1:33 remaining in the game, Providence earned a man-up opportunity as Harvard was whistled for a push.  Harvard got a defensive stop and earned possession of the ball after a 19thsave by Mullin.  However, the Crimson turned the ball over and the Friars called timeout with 48-seconds on the clock.  Providence had three great looks in the final stretch of the game, including two attempts at the top of the crease, but Harvard hung on for the one-goal margin.

  • Hatzipetrakos has posted five-straight multi-goal games for the Friars, with each game consisting of a hat trick or better.
  • Providence out-shot Harvard, 47-33, including a 28-18 advantage in shots on goal.
  • RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) won 11 of 21 face-off opportunities for Providence and picked up a team-high eight gound balls.
