SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. HOFSTRA... The Friars are 1-7 all-time against Hofstra. Last season, Providence fell to the Pride, 12-8. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) led the Friars with two goals. Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) and Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) each added a goal and an assist for Providence. Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made 11 saves.
COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AT HARVARD... After being down 9-3 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Friars battled back to the final score of 9-8. Hatzipetrakos led Providence with four goals, including two in the fourth-quarter rally. RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) won 11-of-21 face-offs and picked up a team-high eight ground balls. Boyce made nine saves in goal, while Harvard's goalie made 20.
HATZ TRICK... After being held scoreless on opening day against BU, Nick Hatzipetrakos has recorded 18 goals in the last five games. He posted four at Holy Cross, against Sacred Heart and at Harvard. His three-goal games came at Bryant and St. Joseph's. The senior has 67 goals and 22 assists in his career for 89 total points. On March 11, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his performance at Harvard.
Head Coach Chris Gabrielli named Hatzipetrakos an additional team captain on March 12. He joins Boyce, Nick Crews (Longmeadow, Mass.), Kearns and David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.).
BOYCE NAMED TO TEWAARTON WATCH LIST AND A SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE... Boyce, a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was recently named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-consecutive season (Feb. 28). He was then named one of 30 candidates for the prestigous Senior CLASS Award (March 4). The goalkeeper has already had a storied career in Friartown, including being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a USILA/Nike Third-Team All-American in 2017. For his career, Boyce holds a 9.41 goals against average, a .544 save percentage and has accumulated 598 total saves.
So far this season Boyce has a 9.26 goals against average and a .570 save percentage. He currently ranks 10th in the nation in save percentage and 11th in goals against average. He's also first in the league in saves per game, averaging 12.17.
SHOOTOUT WITH SACRED HEART... Providence was edged by Sacred Heart (March 2) by a score of 17-16. Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) posted a league-high eight points (five goals, three assists). Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) had six points on a goal and five assists. Hatzipetrakos scored four times and freshman Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) posted a hat trick. Boyce made 11 saves in the loss.
FRIARS WIN BIG AT ST. JOSEPH'S... Providence picked up a 14-5 road win on Feb. 23 at SJU. Grillo posted seven points on three goals and four assists. Hatzipetrakos added three goals and Hinrichs tallied one goal and three assists for four points. Tate Boyce notched a season-high 27 saves.
GRILLO GETS GOING... Freshman Matt Grillo has had a strong start to his rookie campaign, starting all six contests. He is tied for second on the team in points (18) and is third in both goals (11) and assists (seven).He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 25 after a seven-point performance at St. Joseph's.
KILLING OFF PENALTIES... Providence is second in the BIG EAST in penalty-killing percentage, allowing just five goals on 20 attempts (.750). The Friars are also the only team in the league to record a man-down goal this season.
ROMEO LEADS AT THE 'X'... Junior RJ Romeo is 48-of-91 (.527) from the face-off 'X'. He leads the team in both attempts and face-off percentage. He ranks first in the BIG EAST in ground balls per game (5.50) and is third in face-off percentage.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with a total of 10 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected four first-place votes and 25 points overall. Marquette (18 points) was picked to finish second and Georgetown (17 points), who received one first place vote, was picked third.
TWO FRIARS EARN PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST SPOTS... It was announced by the league on Wednesday, Jan. 23 that Providence College men's lacrosse players Tate Boyce and Alex George (Simsbury, Conn.) were named to the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Boyce, who has now been on the squad for three-consecutive seasons, was a unanimous selection.
WHERE KEARNS RANKS... Last year, senior Brendan Kearns became the 22nd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. He currently has 80 goals and 47 assists for 127 total points. He is 11th all-time in points, 13th all-time in goals and tied for 15th in all-time assists.
In the BIG EAST, Kearns is currently eighth in points per game (3.17) and seventh in goals per game (2.17). He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice already this season (Feb. 11 and March 4).
SCOUTING HOFSTRA.. Hofstra improved to 3-4 on the season with a 9-7 win over St. John's on Tuesday (Mar. 12). Three of the team's four losses have comed to nationally-ranked opponents, including BIG EAST teams Georgetown and Villanova. The Pride average 8.6 goals per game and allow 9.9 per game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH...  Junior Ryan Tierney leads the team in goals (18) and points (22). Whit Stopak and Ryan Kinnard each have eight goals and eight total points. Sophomore face-off specialist Brian Herber has taken all but one draw. He's 83-of-148 on the season and holds a .561 percentage.
Redshirt sophomore Bobby Casey has started all seven games in net. He holds a 9.82 goals against average and a .517 save percentage for the Pride.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars complete a three-game road swing at UMass Lowell on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. The next home game is Sunday, March 24 against Drexel (1:00 p.m.).
