SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. UML... The Friars are 5-5 all-time against the River Hawks. Last season, the Friars fell in a tight contest (12-11). The Friars trailed 9-1 early in the second quarter, but battled back, falling just short. Both teams went 1-for-1 on man-up chances and the Friars dominated at the 'X' with 18 wins on 27 attempts.
ONE GOAL GAMES... Four of the Friars' seven games this season have been decided by just one goal, including each of the last three contests.
LOCK DOWN DEFENSE... Providence ranks 14th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 9.29 goals per game.
HOT START FUELS WIN AT HOFSTRA... The Friars jumped out to a 5-0 lead at Hofstra and eventually came away with an 11-10 victory in New York. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) and Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) each scored four goals in the win. Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) made 16 saves in helping the Friars improve to 3-4 on the year. Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.) took a season-high 17 face-offs in the game, posting a .588 win percentage at the 'X.'
HATZ TRICK... After being held scoreless on opening day against BU, Nick Hatzipetrakos has posted six-straight games with three or more goals. He has a total of 22 goals, which already matches his total from the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The attackman has had four games with four goals this season, including the last three games. Hatzipetrakos has 71 goals and 22 assists in his career for 93 total points. On March 11, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his performance at Harvard.
Head Coach Chris Gabrielli named Hatzipetrakos an additional team captain on March 12. He joins Boyce, Nick Crews (Longmeadow, Mass.), Kearns and David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.).
Hatzipetrakos ranks 17th nationally and third in the BIG EAST in goals per game (3.14). He is also second in the BIG EAST in shot percentage (.478).
BOYCE NAMED TO TEWAARTON WATCH LIST AND A SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE... Boyce, a three-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was recently named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for the second-consecutive season (Feb. 28). He was then named one of 30 candidates for the prestigous Senior CLASS Award (March 4). The goalkeeper has already had a storied career in Friartown, including being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and a USILA/Nike Third-Team All-American in 2017. For his career, Boyce holds a 9.42 goals against average, a .546 save percentage and has accumulated 614 total saves.
So far this season Boyce has a 9.37 goals against average and a .578 save percentage. He currently ranks ninth in the nation in save percentage and 11th in goals against average. He's the BIG EAST leader in save percentage and saves per game, averaging 12.71.
AXELSON'S FIRST MULTI-GOAL GAME... Junior midfielder Dan Axelson posted four goals, including the game winner, on Saturday at Hofstra (March 16). It was the first multi-goal game of his career and pushed his goal total to five.
ROMEO LEADS AT THE 'X'... Junior RJ Romeo is 51-of-98 (.520) from the face-off 'X'. He leads the team in both attempts and face-off percentage. He ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in ground balls per game (4.71) and is fourth in face-off percentage.
HINRICHS DISHES... Junior Tim Hinrichs leads the Friars in assists, with 12 so far this season. He ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in assists per game, averaging 1.71.
GRILLO GETS GOING... Freshman Matt Grillo has had a strong start to his rookie campaign, starting all seven contests. He is third on the team in points (18) and is third in both goals (11) and assists (seven). He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 25 after a seven-point performance at St. Joseph's.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish fifth in the 2019 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with a total of 10 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected four first-place votes and 25 points overall. Marquette (18 points) was picked to finish second and Georgetown (17 points), who received one first place vote, was picked third.
TWO FRIARS EARN PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST SPOTS... It was announced by the league on Wednesday, Jan. 23 that Providence College men's lacrosse players Tate Boyce and Alex George (Simsbury, Conn.) were named to the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Boyce, who has now been on the squad for three-consecutive seasons, was a unanimous selection.
WHERE KEARNS RANKS... Last year, senior Brendan Kearns became the 22nd player in program history to reach the 100-point mark. He currently has 80 goals and 47 assists for 127 total points. He is 11th all-time in points, 13th all-time in goals and tied for 15th in all-time assists.
Kearns is second on the team in points (19) and goals (13). He's been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice already this season (Feb. 11 and March 4).
SCOUTING UML.. The River Hawks dropped to 3-4 on the season with losses to UMass (14-4) and UAlbany (17-11) last week. UMass Lowell's victories have come over Quinnipiac, Dartmouth and Manhattan. The River Hawks rank fifth in the nation in man-up offense, converting on 10-of-21 chances this season (.476). UML also ranks eighth in face-off winning percentage, with a .616 success rate.
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Cory Highfield leads the offense with 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points. Daniel Cozzi, who leads the team in assists (12), has 16 points for UML in just four games played. Freshman FOGO, Liam McDonough, is 95-of-153 from the 'X.' His .621 win percentage ranks 15th in the nation. He also ranks 12th in the nation in ground balls, picking up 8.00 per game.
Three different goalkeepers have made starts for the River Hawks this season. Grant Lardieri has seen the most time, starting five games and posting a 2-3 record. He holds an 11.66 goals against average and a .463 save percentage.
